How effective is the
combination of your
main product and
ancillary texts?
Evaluation Question 2;
MY MEDIA PRODUCTS
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; COLOR
SCHEME.
For my media products I tended to stick to a consistent color scheme
of blues and a beige-grey color. These two color's acted as a theme
throughout both my music video and also within my digipak and
magazine advertisement. The connotations of the color blue
represent anguish, it is the opposing to that of reds passionate and
dangerous representations, meaning it is the ultimate representation
of sorrow. It is described as ‘the color blue within itself has a
calming, peaceful façade, yet behind this façade there are deep
connotations of melancholy’. This relates very well to my music video
as the narrative is based around the deteriorating of a girls life from
beginning to end. The connotations of the blue hue within the color
grade help to drive this even into the earlier stages of the plot.
However the beige- grey used is intended as a contrast to this within
moments of happiness for the character- yet not using a color that is
too overpowering. These two colors were mimicked with my ancillary
products, as the same grey-beige and blue was used in both my
digipak and also the blue was featured on the magazine advert.
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; EXAMPLES
FROM MY MUSIC VIDEO.
There are many examples of the
use of blue within my music video,
it acts as a running theme through
the narrative, it is showcased from
the very start right through the the
end shot and is always present.
A blue hue, which was quite
cool in contrast to that of some
other shots, was also added
during the saddest scenes of
the music video to solidify the
bond between the connotations
of melancholy. This directly
linked with the actual colors
used on that of my ancillary
products.
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; EXAMPLES
FROM MY ANCILLARY PRODUCTS.It is clear to see that the
main motive color used
within the magazine
advertisement is in fact
the blue color. As this is
the only color that has
been used, the rest of
the advert is presented
using black and white,
with the exception of
the green Spotify logo.
This blue color
is showcased on
almost every
separate
element of my
digipak (CD,
back cover and
front cover),
with the grey-
beige being
featured on
every single
aspect (inside
cover as well).
This enables a
solid link to the
advert shown
on the right,
The color scheme of beige and yellow is a
concurrent occurrence, creating synergy
throughout the products, making them
appear as though they are supposed to be in
conjunction with one another (which is the
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; COLOR
SCHEME.
As shown in the examples I have given within the previous slides as
to the consistent color scheme used throughout all three of my media
products. It is clear that the color scheme has been a constant
thought in the back of my mind, to ensure that all of my media
products are tied together efficiently and coherently, mimicking that
of real life products. The use of color scheme, and particularly the
one I have chosen is significant in portraying connotations and ideas
that I wish to reveal to the audience in a subtle manner. The blue and
the beige-grey have been undeniably showcased throughout all of
the elements of my media products meaning it is a staple in
representing my band’s identity, through the use of both the ancillary
products and my music video.
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; IMAGERY.
The use of the side profile shots of the
main character within the music video,
imitate the silhouette element featured
within both my digipak and my magazine
advertisement- creating a connection
between the products. This shot in
particular is supposed to connote
innocence and fragility within the
character, as these are her main traits
presented through the narrative. Therefore
by having this silhouette imagery featured
on my ancillaries as well further drives this
emotional response.
SYNERGY IN DESIGN; IMAGERY.
The usage of flowers was also a link placed
between my digipak and music video. The
inside cover design featured within the
digipak showcases flowers within the top
left hand corner and bottom right hand
corner. The reason for including these as a
feature on my digipak is because it
connotes and in some ways foreshadows
the death of the main character within the
narrative of my music video. The flowers
within the music video can be seen during
one of the last shots of a graveyard,
emphasizing the element of death.
Therefore, again, meaning I have created a
link between ancillary and music video,
SYNERGY IN DESIGN;
TYPOGRAPHY.
In terms of the band name,
the same typography was
used on my digipak as well
as my magazine
advertisement. This is to
identify the band with this
specific font, meaning that
every time an audience see
this particular font, they
should connect this to my
band, creating an identity.
With regards to the album
name, this also remained
in the same font
throughout the entirety of
my media products. The
desired effect was to
appear as though the
name of the album was a
signature- this always
appeared on the shoulder
of the silhouette.
When referring to the font
used to highlight the tracks
on the back of the digipak, I
used a combination of two
fonts. Again these can be
seen in more places than just
on the back of the digipak. I
also used one of the two
fonts on the inside cover of
the digipak, this was used
for the quote stating ’Where
SYNERGY IN CONSTRUCTION;
CONTEXT OF TEXT.
In terms of my magazine
advertisement there was a lot of
text and information contained
within this. A rating system, using
stars was repeated three times on
the poster.
The use of the same font to showcase the names
of the magazine that rated the album, as well as
the platforms the album is available on. This was
a font which imitated that of a retro typewriter.A san serif font was also used in conjunction
with the typewriter font, this showcased the
information ‘debut album out not’ as well as the
information that states ’includes the singles-
dark paradise, wildflower & righteous’. This font
paired with that of the typewriter creates an
interesting combination that work together to
create variation, yet at the same time keeping
WAS THIS CONSIDERED A
SUCCESS?
Overall I would consider the combination of my main product (music
video) and both of my ancillary products (digipak and magazine
advertisement) to compliment each other in a manner that reflects a
professional product. My media products combine design, layout and
imagery to create synergy in order to be recognizable by my audience
and help in furthering brand identity and emphasizing genre.
To conclude, I believe I have three very strong products that share
very similar aspects, despite being of different media forms and
having different conventions within their products. I also believe that
my products are made more appealing, due to all of these elements,
for my target audience.
