2. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Chandler’s theory of genre is made up of conventions and content is conveyed throughout my
work. On my ancillary I have used different fonts; the quote I have used is in a bold and black
outlined font. This is so it stands out on the white background and is the obvious first thing for
the audience to notice.
I have also used a very dark gothic font for the name of my newspaper as this is a stereotypical
font for a newspaper name.
I have used an England flag for the background of the poster; this is iconic around the country
for the England football team and will promote this poster to a particular type of audience, such
as working class males. The images of the world cup will also appeal to the target audience as
they will be patriotic.
Neale’s idea of mental machinery is used in my billboard. The genre conventions I have used in
my poster, such as the England flag have been specific to a target audience and have allowed
the audience to understand the billboard. I have also used icons that the audience will relate to
such as the images of the world cup. The text is also very informal and is the language that the
target audience would use so they will be able to relate to it. The way I have used England and
Scotland will also make the audience feel patriotic. Although my newspaper uses stereotypical
genre conventions of a newspaper it is also different as it a local newspaper and will apply to the
local people as they are the target audience.
When I analysed typical conventions of a newspaper advert I found that the typical radio advert
being around 30 seconds. I made my advert last 22 seconds so it was short and snappy yet it
had enough information packed in for the listeners to understand. The speaker I chose was very
enthusiastic so she would engage with the audience, she also has a strong Salford accent which
is good for the audience to relate to. I used the tag line ‘The Eccles Examiner, examining Eccles
for you.’ I think this is catchy and will help the listener remember the name for next time they buy
a newspaper. I also used catchy music in the background which will help stick in the head of the
listeners and make them remember it, it also stops the newspaper sounding boring.
