1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Film Magazine Front Cover
Conventions
1)The magazine name must be
clearly displayed.
2) A variety of cover lines that
draws your attention
3) Needs to stand out because
it is the main focus.
4) Good image – one of focal
points.
5) Good colour scheme will
result in creating mood for the
magazine
6) Features popular star/films
7) Barcode and price
8) Issue number and sell date
9) Sell line/banner at the top
Good colour
scheme – splash of
red really make
the masthead
stand out
Direct address – grabs
the target audience
attention straight away
Variety of sell lines
FINAL MAGAZINE FRONT COVER –
MAIN COVER LINE ‘Dawn of Devotion”
The conventions I have used in my Front Cover
I have used a thick bold masthead
so that this really stands out and
the audience will remember what
the magazine was called.
Direct Address by the model
looking directly at the TA and
capturing their attention almost
immediately..
This image
reminds me
ofWilly
Wonka
which is a
good
relation to
the fantasy
theme.
The colour scheme I
have done is mostly
strong bold colours this
is because when this
will stand out the most
and the shades in the
models hair/green velvet
background they will
look at it with wonder.
CONVENTION DEVELOPMENT
TRANSFORMATION
I went through a drastic change
by changing my whole
magazine because i felt the first
draft looked to fashion like and
it did not fit in with the
magazine conventions. One of
the problems was there was
no direct address to grab the
audiences attention and the
image looks like its for a
fashion magazine trying to sell
clothes.
I liked how the text
hid behind the
models hair – it is a
good technique to
show reputation in
film magazines with.
I came up with the name
DEBUT because I thought it
would work really well with
the main image of my
magazine as she's an actress
and debut means the first
appearance of something or
someone.
CHALLENGING CONVENTIONS
With my magazine being £3.90 it
could perhaps at the upper class due
to the fact that most magazines cost
around £2.50. I have added an issue
number because this is the first ever
issue with actress Lucy Dack.
The magazine title is not as big as
some other magazines and this was
because I wanted the main image
to be the main focus. Because this
is a ‘Debut’ magazine it is used to
make the stars first appearance and
the main image is upmost
important for the viewers to
remember who appeared on it –
relating it to the main cover line
also.
Conventions of Fantasy Trailers
The term fantasy is used to describe the specific genre that uses magic and other supernatural
phenomena as a primary element of the plot, theme or setting for a film – Films like this usually
involve magic supernatural and fantasy make believe words.
Mystical Creatures or
monsters eg vampires,
fairies dragons?
Separation between
fantasy world and earth
world – where fantasy
being know of earth but
non fantasy beings don't
know of the other
world.
Trailers are very secretive as
they don't give a lot away.
Dark and
mysterious the
feeling on the
unknown
Quick and
short snippets
of action to
prevent plot
being given
away.
Fade in fade
out to black
show the
contrast of
colours used.
‘Dawn of Devotion’ Media FilmTrailer Link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C5hxRihF5Q
One of the most effective conventions was the fade in and fade out to black this was
because it gave the clips space in between to come out with something bright and colourful
each time making the viewers excited about what might come next or the colours that will
be on next.
CONVENTIONS IVE USED
The butterflies were a part of the mythical
creatures but more like mystical – it was
very hard to manage them to make them
look realistic but it worked out very well in
the end. I stuck most of them around the
location.
DEVELOPING AND ADVANCING CONVENTIONS
The way i have done my film teaser trailer is basically like a build up from soft music
+ setting the place scenes to upbeat instruments and people getting hurt. When i
had first done it I was in confusion of how to set it but finding out the conventions
of a film fantasy trailer with fast snippets during action or dramatic shots really
helped as it did not give a lot away but at the same time it made the viewer want to
know more about it .
This gave the teaser a mysterious feeling to it and i love the angle from
the other characters perspective.
Challenging Conventions
Most fantasy trailers have a dark and mysterious side to it, my one has more
of romance but a little bit of a dark twist with Lust’s character involved. – they
normally have more of a humorous approach however this was a very hard
thing to do so I went for more of a romantic/love approach.
Another way I have challenged conventions is that fantasy movies normally
have highly edited special effects (CGI) which add to the whole fantasy theme.
Unfortunately due to not wanting to make my film trailer unrealistic I had to
work around the whole special effects idea so I played with camera angles,
colours, location instead.
2. How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Main Product and Ancillary Texts
SIMILARITIES
Using the same symbol of butterflies and pocket
watch (signature of the film)
-Same fonts which
connect all the
pieces together
-Having a tagline on
most tasks – makes
the film more
memorable
--The actors are
the same all the
way
Using the same symbol/signature of the film
The picket watch and the butterfly is something that is
constantly used throughout the main task and ancillary ones
also. I chose a pocket watch because I thought it gave a good
representation of Dawn running out of time to save her
loved one and
every time the
audience looked at
the pocket watch i
wanted it to
basically spark up
the memory of the
build up of tension
in the film teaser.
The other symbol of the film was the
Butterfly which was in all of the tasks apart from the
magazine this was because I felt it did not need it due to
the powerful colours in the magazine. The reason i chose
the butterfly was because of the fantasy convention of
mystical creatures and I think the butterflies worked great.
FONT
On all of my tasks I have used a continuous font ‘The Alistaren’
this is to ensure that my target audience will recognise the
package with. I have tried to keep it the same looking and
added a few borders here and there to add to the fantasy
theme – the ‘Dawn of Devotion’ Banner on the film poster
was done to show a it like a script of fate – relating to the
tagline of the film.
I have looked at other promotional packages
and I have realised that some magazines do
not have the same font as the other
products. This may be because of individuality
and fitting in with the magazine font.
The actor in my film teaser is a friend that goes to a well
recognised performing arts private school and he was perfect
for the job. I would have liked to have him star in the other
publications for his professionalism but he had only time to do
the film teaser.
USINGTHE
SAME
CHARACTERS
I have used the same characters
throughout the whole package to
ensure the characters get recognised
and people will be able to remember
them.
.
I have used the actress that plays Dawn as the front cover
because I thought this would be a good twist on things and
the audience can learn more about the actress making them
feel involved. She has starred in a lot of other fantasy movies as
well (just like Helena Bonham Carter)you can see this by
looking at her outfit,
My aim for the tagline of the whole package was to come up with something
innovative and imaginative. Something that would sum up the whole plot in one
sentence/grabs the audiences attention and I feel the tagline I have come up works
really well with the characters and the plot.
The word hope links to the pocket watch as it is a race against time for Dawn to save her
lover Conric.
-The word love was used to show the love triangle used in the film.
The word fate was used for a deeper meaning and capture the audiences emotions to
whether Conric and Dawn will be able to be together.
The tagline is in all of my products except my magazine as i didn’t feel it would fit
well with the other cover lines and I that using a tagline would give the target
audience in any of the products a heads up to what it is about before they even
watch it.
3.What have you learned from
your audience feedback?
Who do you think it is aimed at and why?
This was one of the first questions i asked just so that I could get a clear
understanding of what people thought my target audience would be and by
gathering this information I could move on to the others with the right
target audience.
A feedback peer said that
it would be aimed at
teenager’s and young
adults they thought this
because the actors and
actresses are quite young
in the package.This is
interesting because I have
learnt from this that
people are more likely to
watch something that they
would be able to relate
too henceforth why
people at that age would
go watch this movie.
Another interesting thing I
have learnt is that the
romance itself would
attract people around this
age. Statically people
around this age are more
likely to start building
emotions for one another
and this may be why they
might want to watch this
film just for the romance
purposes and to see if
they can relate to their
own personal life and
struggles.
Further more I learnt
that due to the
death/injury in the film
this may attract a male
target audience solely
for the danger bit and
the romance would
attract the females.This
is good because on the
film poster and
magazine there are only
females on there
however the teaser
might attract a male
audience.
Do you think that the promotional film package works well
together as a whole?
When collecting feedback I decided to interview a suitable target audience of 16 -
25, this was because I believe a audience around this age would be most likely to
watch the film I have produced,
One of the things I had learnt
when taking feedback is that
there is a theme that is running
through my promotional
package.There is bright bold
colours and there is a similar
house style throughout. It was
nice to know that my target
audience had said ‘If it was in a
line – up, you would be able to
figure which ones were
together’This made it clear
that i have worked towards a
clear goal of synergy. And they
all work well hand in hand.
Another piece of feedback I
have had back during
interviews was that costume
and make up is what made
everything come together
and the feedback peers said
they recognised that it looked
like something you would see
in the Hunger Games.Which
their clothes is very fantasy
like and no only does the
make up and costume put the
package together it
individualises the genre of the
film.
The Hunger Games –
Capital Couture one of
my biggest inspirations
in costume and makeup
Do you think i have used resistive shot types and
transitions?
I asked this question because Final Cut pro’s transitions was limited to
what we could use for a fantasy teaser.A fantasy trailer normally consists
of lots of after effects however I did not have the facilities to do this so I
wanted to know what my interviewees thought of the transitions I have
used.
One of the interviewees
explain that i have used a
variety of shot types, the
way that the actress at the
beginning of the teaser is
shot from a low angle sets
the scene and the houses
look bigger than the
actress. I was pleased
hearing this because I
spent a lot of time
planning on how id make
it look fantasy like and the
shot types I would use.
One of the
questions I had
asked was ‘What
draws attention to
you the most in the
promotional film
package’The
interviewee had
said that the film
set looked like it
was a doll’s house
and it had a good
fantasy layout.
From this I can learn that
the camera angles really
do make a big impact as
to how the genre of the
teaser is viewed and each
individual thing for
example location and
shot type rely on each
other to produce
something to a good
quality.
4., How did you use media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation
stages?
What kind of software and publications
have I used?
 Blogger
 Google Search
Engine
 Photoshop CS6
 Slideshare
 Microsoft
Powerpoint
 FinalCut pro
 Sound Pro
 Prezzi
 DaFont
 Brusheezy
 Microsoft Excel
How did I research and plan?
My source of information had come from google search using images,
screen-shotting as i went along.
I tried to be as articulate as i could whilst planning – being colour co-
ordinated in Powerpoint and using arrows to plan.
Microsoft Excel – This had helped me put the data of my
questionnaire when I was researching into statistics and a bar chart
so that it would be presentable when I need it for data. Microsoft
Excel is a program I have used before and it is familiar to me also.
Youtube – Was a great help when researching, it gave me ideas into
trailers and gave me access to many fantasy teasers which I do not
know how I would be able to get them any other how.YouTubes
videos inspired me and it also helped me find music for my teaser as i
had usedYouTube converter to change it into an MP3.
Bloggers embedding was one of the easiest to navigate around – it
was simple and straight forward normally id have difficulty with this
however after a few go’s I had the hang of it.
The Magic of Photoshop Cs6
Photoshop was the foundation of contracting everything, I had even used it
for the film teaser which I did not expect to do so.
I had used the brushes
available on Brusheezy
to create this jpeg image
and then I created
another one with just a
border so it could fade
in and fade out the text.
It was difficult at first
because i had to get the
timing right but it was
worth the hassle.
Photoshop was the reason why i
could get the best coloured results
out of my film poster. The vibrance
and saturation tool enabled me to
increase colour levels to what I
wanted them to be and my goal was
bright and bold to add to the fantasy
theme.
Font from DaFont
Variety of tools I
have used:
• Cropping
• Levels
• DaFont
• Outer Glow
• Drop Shadow
• Vibrance/
Saturation
• Spot Healing
Brush
• SelectionTool
• Dodging and
Burning
• Transform
• Rubber
• Brushes
• And many more
Final Cut pro was a new piece of product that I had never used before
and so were the Mac’s. I found it rather difficult to get into the system
of using a Mac PC, by growing up with XP however there were a lot of
advantages that the Mac had and one was the final cut pro editing
software.
One of the most time consuming
obstacles which made editing
seem forever was the rendering,
after every part of clip being
edited it needed to be rendered I
had a few issues with some of the
Mac’s also and the server not
being able to handle my clip size
due to the DSLR camera i had
used. So there were some lagged
bits during the editing process.
When constructing the film teaser i thought of it as like making a short and
eventful story and I had in mind fast moving shot types a clean HD quality
teaser etc, I wanted the professionalism to be at the most important.
I feel like the Evaluation was an obstacle within
itself. I wanted different ways of presenting what I
had created to make it look like the journey I've
come from. Prezzi was a very good piece of
software however I had a lot of internet problems
and kept losing work so I could only present one
bit of the presentation within it. I was quite glad
that I had the opportunity to use it because the
outcome was brilliant.
The other types of Evaluating I did was using
Facebook and social media and messaging people
as to what they thought was good about my
promotional film package and what i could do to
improve it.
Overall i feel like i have come a long way using
different programs and tools etc I have been
introduced to 3 new things and developed skills in
other programs.

It was nice to know that my target audience had said ‘If it was in a line – up, you would be able to figure which ones were together’This made it clear that i have worked towards a clear goal of synergy. And they all work well hand in hand. Another piece of feedback I have had back during interviews was that costume and make up is what made everything come together and the feedback peers said they recognised that it looked like something you would see in the Hunger Games.Which their clothes is very fantasy like and no only does the make up and costume put the package together it individualises the genre of the film. The Hunger Games – Capital Couture one of my biggest inspirations in costume and makeup
  • 21. Do you think i have used resistive shot types and transitions? I asked this question because Final Cut pro’s transitions was limited to what we could use for a fantasy teaser.A fantasy trailer normally consists of lots of after effects however I did not have the facilities to do this so I wanted to know what my interviewees thought of the transitions I have used. One of the interviewees explain that i have used a variety of shot types, the way that the actress at the beginning of the teaser is shot from a low angle sets the scene and the houses look bigger than the actress. I was pleased hearing this because I spent a lot of time planning on how id make it look fantasy like and the shot types I would use. One of the questions I had asked was ‘What draws attention to you the most in the promotional film package’The interviewee had said that the film set looked like it was a doll’s house and it had a good fantasy layout. From this I can learn that the camera angles really do make a big impact as to how the genre of the teaser is viewed and each individual thing for example location and shot type rely on each other to produce something to a good quality.
  • 22. 4., How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
  • 23. What kind of software and publications have I used?  Blogger  Google Search Engine  Photoshop CS6  Slideshare  Microsoft Powerpoint  FinalCut pro  Sound Pro  Prezzi  DaFont  Brusheezy  Microsoft Excel
  • 24. How did I research and plan? My source of information had come from google search using images, screen-shotting as i went along. I tried to be as articulate as i could whilst planning – being colour co- ordinated in Powerpoint and using arrows to plan. Microsoft Excel – This had helped me put the data of my questionnaire when I was researching into statistics and a bar chart so that it would be presentable when I need it for data. Microsoft Excel is a program I have used before and it is familiar to me also. Youtube – Was a great help when researching, it gave me ideas into trailers and gave me access to many fantasy teasers which I do not know how I would be able to get them any other how.YouTubes videos inspired me and it also helped me find music for my teaser as i had usedYouTube converter to change it into an MP3. Bloggers embedding was one of the easiest to navigate around – it was simple and straight forward normally id have difficulty with this however after a few go’s I had the hang of it.
  • 25. The Magic of Photoshop Cs6 Photoshop was the foundation of contracting everything, I had even used it for the film teaser which I did not expect to do so. I had used the brushes available on Brusheezy to create this jpeg image and then I created another one with just a border so it could fade in and fade out the text. It was difficult at first because i had to get the timing right but it was worth the hassle. Photoshop was the reason why i could get the best coloured results out of my film poster. The vibrance and saturation tool enabled me to increase colour levels to what I wanted them to be and my goal was bright and bold to add to the fantasy theme. Font from DaFont Variety of tools I have used: • Cropping • Levels • DaFont • Outer Glow • Drop Shadow • Vibrance/ Saturation • Spot Healing Brush • SelectionTool • Dodging and Burning • Transform • Rubber • Brushes • And many more
  • 26. Final Cut pro was a new piece of product that I had never used before and so were the Mac’s. I found it rather difficult to get into the system of using a Mac PC, by growing up with XP however there were a lot of advantages that the Mac had and one was the final cut pro editing software. One of the most time consuming obstacles which made editing seem forever was the rendering, after every part of clip being edited it needed to be rendered I had a few issues with some of the Mac’s also and the server not being able to handle my clip size due to the DSLR camera i had used. So there were some lagged bits during the editing process. When constructing the film teaser i thought of it as like making a short and eventful story and I had in mind fast moving shot types a clean HD quality teaser etc, I wanted the professionalism to be at the most important.
  • 27. I feel like the Evaluation was an obstacle within itself. I wanted different ways of presenting what I had created to make it look like the journey I've come from. Prezzi was a very good piece of software however I had a lot of internet problems and kept losing work so I could only present one bit of the presentation within it. I was quite glad that I had the opportunity to use it because the outcome was brilliant. The other types of Evaluating I did was using Facebook and social media and messaging people as to what they thought was good about my promotional film package and what i could do to improve it. Overall i feel like i have come a long way using different programs and tools etc I have been introduced to 3 new things and developed skills in other programs. EVALUATION
