Production Process Evaluation
Factual Research
The first part of my factual research was helpful to understand and learn how to produce a nature styled video which was what I was
trying to produce for my factual product. I analysed a bird feeding video that gave me an understanding about the production
techniques, presentation and aesthetical qualities that are best fit for the style of the kind of video that I was researching.
This was inclusive of clearly presented verbal information about how to create a bird feeder and what's best for specific bird species
alongside a well framed video with the visual information of the putting together of the bird feeder so that the audience could see
the guides positive outcome of the attraction that the birds would get out of the feeding station and so that they could see a focused
view of how it is done in an understandable fashion.
The techniques that were used in the first part of my research were likely the most influenced aspect I took from my research, as I
gain a great understanding of how I could utilise my camera shot via using the appropriate and the most desirable angles for my own
factual video from this bird feeder tutorial video whereby they used a lot of close-up shots. This was highly effective when
showcasing the bird feeder rather than a medium or long shot because close up shots are needed to see what is happening as
garden birds are usually too small to otherwise not be dominated with close ups in a video. I learnt from my own joy from seeing
these close-up shots of the birds that it can be highly positively simulating as there is a fuller image of all the distinct features on the
birds that humans don't see often without the use of technology.
It was an importance for me, when researching, to understand the extent of orderliness and rawness of the consistent style of nature
documentaries because I'm someone who sometimes needs discipline when producing work as I can be quite chaotic. For the
aesthetic of my video, I learned from my research that it works best when the produced video isn't overly edited because the theme
of nature shouldn't be tainted with too much but should be allowed to express itself without the aid of editing. From my research
I've learnt that it's best to keep editing to a minimum in the postproduction of wildlife recording because it feels better to allow the
video to do the talking in the context of my bird feeding video. Especially since it isn't needed when audiences know that nature is
beautiful on its own and know that trying to make it too pretty would be to more the natural process of the animal's real lively hood.
On the flip side, I've learnt that editing birds can be useful, when editing at humanist presentation, animation and/or a mire frame to
establish a template whereby birds can be shown. When using a transitioning effect, or a subtle masking effect, it is more acceptable
then to the extent of layering on various, unneeded and dissatisfying alterations to a clip.
The array of useful information within the first video I had analysed gave me more confidence to do a similar thing within my own
but with a more charismatic and alternative presentation with my mum as the presenter so that my factual video would have a
different entertaining presentation. The video I had watched when into anatomy about bird's bill sizes and why it is important to
choose wisely about which bird feed food is best fit that set subspecies of bird. The in-depth information that occurred was
something that spiked my interest because I felt like within some online tutorials there is often nothing told of the why, something is
done and for what reason, which I feel is greatly important for audiences. Hence it is more of an educational experience for them, as
they take more fresh information out of the production.
In second part of my factual research, I focused on a different video in my factual research. The second video I had
researched was much simpler home-made bird feeder tutorial and basic as it was shorter. Which meant less time for
explanation within that time constraint in the video. It was useful that I had analyzed the video because the short duration
with the simplistic presentation made me think about the pros and cons of the video. It made me think about the limited
information about the effectiveness of the home-made bird feeder. Such as the seed type, which can drastically change the
number of birds that come to the feeder because some seeds can only attract certain bird due to bill sizes, which was
absent information within the video that I had researched.
Making these observations in my analysis gave me more confidence because I had learnt new production and information
presentation techniques from both factual videos I had researched. Researching different types of similar products allowed
me to develop my own ideas as I was able to objectively look at two different video as with elements that would counter act
each other because the first video had a lot of information and the second video had basic information but straight to the
point information.
The outcome of this analytical factual research made me come to conclusions about what I would do for my factual video.
In the end I decided to take more inspiration from the first video hence I found it was felt more information in what the
audience should go to create their bird feeder and ensure the birds are healthy which the second video did well for the
tutorial of the video but didn't include information about bird safety. I made my video more complex than the homemade
bird feeder tutorial because I feel like when I'm watching a tutorial the I would want the more useful information about the
subject at hand, as possible so that I can get the most out of it without being confused about which the guide is telling me
to do. Which was why I choosing to make my video 3 minuets long with added information alongside what I was talking
about, explaining why I did what I did and how it would help the cause of what I would be making for my audience in my
bird feeding factual video.
Factual Research
Audience Research
Psychographic research was helpful in some areas as I was able to link the psychology to the audience appeal of a product. I
had figured out that the psychographics that linked best with my product were explorer and reformer because of their
natural adventurous and challenging tendencies. This help me realise the personality types I should attract from my
audience for my product. This was helpful after developing an understand of what kind of audience I should attract
psychologically because through the production, I had created a vibrant and atmospheric charisma in presentation along
with the minimalist postproduction camera movement transitions which I thought looked great for my audience who would
like their bird feeder tutorials with some spark and excitement, to fuel their adventurous towards my product. Without
having an idea about these psychographics, I may have not known the isolated tendencies that the specific personality
types possess and how I could pander to them in a visual and audible way through my factual product.
The only downside that I found when researching psychographics was that it was quite time consuming when trying to
figure out which would be the best to appeal to because psychology often includes multi-variables. Meaning it's not a black
and white topic to navigate around when there could be many other psychographics that could be applied to when you're
trying to optimize the appeal to your product. Which can make researching for my product quite complicated since
psychology, though I am given a prep on the various psychographic, can still be complicated for someone who isn't highly
experienced around psychologically induced audience appeal for a product.
Finding the right age for my factual video was hard for me to choose because nature documentaries are often multi
demographic. Since they possess something, everyone can experience across the globe. However, it was helpful when I
finally managed to choose the primary age because I could choose the right aesthetic to suit my audience demographic
of 16-24 years old. As a result of this, I decided to give my factual video a trendy and modern feel so that my product would
appeal to my target audience. I did this by altering the scale and positioning of clips so that it felt like the editing that the
YouTubers implement into their video thus adding relatability to my young audience. Also, I the lighting contrast that I used
in the video felt quite novelty for a video about nature.
When researching my audience, I did research for my own primary audience through a questionnaire. I did this on the
website servey monkey, which allows you to create professional surveys. I made questions like, "what social media do you
used the most?". A well as, "Where do you live?". I did this to reveal my primary audience responses to my questions so the
I could better seek out what they would want from my product. I designed my questions so that they were relevant to what
my factual video would be about, which turned out well because I managed to get insights into where my audience would
have environmental access to create a bird feeding station, which for the most part, they did. As most of my audience lived
in suburban areas and most had some sort of an outdoor area, it gave me more mental clarity as I wouldn't have to make
big changes to what I was going for previously. This was helpful for me because then I knew that my audience was able to go
along with my factual video tutorial and that I wouldn't have to change the original plan for my product to be more
adaptable for my audience.
Most of my audience enjoy bird feeding because the outcome of the survey showed that 54% of them enjoy it and 27%
have never tried out of the 4 multiple choice questions. Though statistically the overwhelming majority didn't enjoy bird
feeding, there was still enough of my audience that enjoyed it to the point where I didn't feel like it would have been
necessary to have changed anything in my factual to make it more entertaining to pander to the limited amount of people
who enjoyed bird feeding because there was enough to vent positive attraction from my video product. Analyzing this
servey was helpful because it reconfirmed my thoughts of how they would feel towards bird feeding. Which was why I didn't
change things up much because I had already had the idea to of a nuanced production style with the color contrast that can
be appreciated by bird lovers and people who don’t care about birds so much. So, I kept that in the plans, after the fact,
because I knew it would catch my audience's interest to a greater degree as not all of them are big fans of bird watching.
Audience Research
Planning
An aspect of my planning that I found to be helpful was the creation of my story board
(pre-production) stage and mood board (Initial plans). When continuing to produce,
using my story board as a reference, it helped tremendously when getting to grips
with my proposed sequence for my production because I could refer to it when
entering production to help me think about the stages in an organised manner. Using
my mood board also helped me identify what imaged elements would be useful when
going into my production because then I was able to develop an idea of what my
presentation and scenery would have a resemblance of.
Skills audit was a great way of planning via expressions of my own abilities that would
be useful when developed for my video because I could narrow down to the skills that
would be most useful for my production that I might to be as equip with then I should
for the commitment of filming and presenting. When planning within this medium of
explanation I managed to put don’t what I'm most comfortable with, editing and that
of which I'm not the most experienced with, camera operations.
Time Management
My time management was good at the start of the factual project but as the UK was in lockdown an I had to do home
workings; it was hard to create a schedule that worked efficiently for me since I wasn't used to the sudden changes for my
college lessons. My time management became poor overtime. I would defiantly say that I got behind with my college work
because of stress and the situations caused by the coronavirus. This caused me to do a lot of catching of my work that
eventually paid off because I started to make progress and getting work, I needed to do, done.
Time was relevent and needed to be managed well, especially post birdfeed set up because to record birds I would need to
have them migrate and nest in my garden. This would include me to emulate and use catalysing techniques to speed up the
proceed of migration so I could get recordings of birds for my video. Things that helped me save time waiting too long for
birds to come to my garden were, locking cat flap so birds won't be scared away, putting up extra bird feeding stations out
to attract more birds and to position the feeder itself closer to the trees/bushes near my garden. This resulted in me being
able to record quickly and wasting less time with my recording process. As thankfully, more birds came than expected and
new species arrived sooner than expected, mostlikely due to the techniques I had used whilst in set up and because I
choose to do so on days when the sun was out which also helped to speed up birds nesting in my garden for recording.
Since it had already been a few days since birds had arrived at my garden and I wanted to start recording as soon as
possible, I had chosen to use a stand for my iPhone on a tree and maximise the resolution camera settings along with
my GoPro. I did this so that I didn't waste any time having to change the position of my GoPro ever hour to make the
example shots more variated. This helped, but also as a backup as I could use the footage from either device just in case one
of the recordings fail (low battery or technical issue...) or a recording of a bird is out of frame. Also, in the end this wasn't as
neccersary as I thought it couldve been, it was still in the realm of possiblity and it's best not to take costly chances to time
and if it can expand the number of simultaneous angles recorded then that’s an even better bonus for my production.

Aesthetic Qualities
Aesthetic Qualities
The homemade and welcoming atmosphere of the well-lit lights for the indoor tutorial clips and
the standard outdoor bird feeder GoPro recordings looks relatable as its obvious looks like it
doesn't have a big budget behind it. The hidden blue light behind the camera emphasizes the
blue my mum is wearing in the foreground, with the orange lights in the background create a
satisfying colour contrast within the video. Also, the slightly chaotic but not messy desk, the
painting and the clock all add up and contribute to that homemade feel which I thought was goo
touch to the aesthetic I was going for and looked good after postproduction when I could see
how the indoor and outdoor clips interchanged between each other.
I also think that the well-angled camera shots work well for the aesthetic because they were at
the highest quality for a standard bird feeding video because they don’t tend to have the highest
valued high tech camera shots.

  • 9. Technical Qualities Frozen Planet My Product Low Budget: Downwards of £125 High Budget film: Helicopters, high- tech cameras and other expensive items were used for the recordings Location: Vast Terrains of Arctic and Antarctic Location: Concentrated Terrain (Garden)
  • 11. Aesthetic Qualities The homemade and welcoming atmosphere of the well-lit lights for the indoor tutorial clips and the standard outdoor bird feeder GoPro recordings looks relatable as its obvious looks like it doesn't have a big budget behind it. The hidden blue light behind the camera emphasizes the blue my mum is wearing in the foreground, with the orange lights in the background create a satisfying colour contrast within the video. Also, the slightly chaotic but not messy desk, the painting and the clock all add up and contribute to that homemade feel which I thought was goo touch to the aesthetic I was going for and looked good after postproduction when I could see how the indoor and outdoor clips interchanged between each other. I also think that the well-angled camera shots work well for the aesthetic because they were at the highest quality for a standard bird feeding video because they don’t tend to have the highest valued high tech camera shots.
