Q. In what ways does your media product use forms and
conventions of real media product?
Researching about codes and conventions in short film was the first thing we did, codes and
Conventions helps in representing our idea to the target audience, if codes and conventions
Are done properly then turns out to be very good, so it was important that we fully understand
The codes and convention of a social realism film
To gather the codes and conventions we used (You tube) as our main source, we watched many
Short films and took ideas.
My media product is a short film, poster and a review page, we chose social realism as our genre
Because we wanted to do something different, something which affects the audience, so we
Chose class difference, poverty, why children have to go out and work?
We see baggers around, and we don’t know why do they have to beg. So this was an interesting
Topic an be compared
Our short film can be used, developed as well as slightly challenged existing real media products
This can be seen in our planning stages

The way in which my media product uses conventions of real media products is through
my use of camera, mise en scene, sound and editing in an attempt to create narrative.
“Narrative theory studies the devices and conventions governing the organization of a
story (fictional or factual) into a sequence.” this is what I have attempted to achieve
within my short film
Mise en scene, As this is a story of a child who’s poor so, the lighting is low to make her
appear grim and to also represent the typical dull life of the people (her family). On the other
Hand there is a rich lady, lights aren't low in her house, it is opposite from the poor girl, to show
The class difference and poverty
We further challenged codes and conventions of real media through our story line, audience get
Emotional when they watch some sad story, our story is sad because we have shown POVERTY,
Poverty affects very well when it is shown on screen.
Our Storyline is simple and easy to follow and is based over a short period of time.
The narrative is condensed and there will be limited dialogue. Instead characters are
Developed through images and actions rather than extended and lengthy dialogue
sequences.
However it is not often that Short Films contain a lot of dialogue nor a lot of characters as
there is not a lot of time to properly allow the audience to interact with the characters,
We tried to do it as perfectly as we could to challenge the forms and conventions of real media

We have shown simplicity in storyline, which would represent real life media, putting so
Much effects would make our short film fake, which would obviously make our short film
Look bad
our short film has 4 characters, 2 of them have main characters specially the poor girl.
This is also done in order to keep the audience engaged and be able to follow the storyline
without being bombarded with information and new people. Characters are well represented.
Including a twist is a common convention in short film although this is not a general rule and
not all short films will use this format. However, a twist allows the film maker to tell a short
story in an interesting way and they are able to do this as the short storyline gives fewer clues
to the ending.We even gave a twist in the story when the other maid eats something from the
fridge and blames the poor girl.
Short film depends on the shots, If the shots are not perfect then the film is not perfect!
Overall short films allow for much more creativity and abstraction. Our short film is made up of
a number of creative shots and soundtrack making up an artistic and sometimes quirky piece.
We tried to get ideas from the other movies. Camera shots and movements are basic and simple
close up are used to show the facial expressions, there is also a large use of wide and
establishing shot to allow the viewer to understand where the action take place. Comparison of
rich and poor will be shown by different camera shot, by high and low angles, by lightning by
close ups etc.

Further more it was very easy for us to find a location Poor girl lived in a one room house, in
which she and her family used to live and on the other

We did some voice overs to show poor girls feeling, this gave a good effect in the movie.
There is a bit of depressive diegetic sound will be added to show how child suffer or face
hardship in her/his childhood.
Our short film showed a lot of emotions, mostly it showed sadness, somewhere happiness,
so there was a variety of emotions.Variety of emotions will engage the audience towards the
movie. Short films are used to convey a strong emotion to the viewer whether this is laughter,
pleasure, sadness or anger, sometimes making comments on morals or society in the process.
films can be a lot more powerful in this way as it is easy to make something appear differently
to how it is or to get the audience thinking about a particular topic without having the time to
make up their minds while watching, leaving them to contemplate after the film has finished.
There will also usually be a stronger connection to the characters as they are shown closely
throughout, with the creativity allowing for more humor and pleasure.
Budgets for short film are usually quite low.We had a low budget and we also divided money so
it was easy for us to pay

Costumes matter a lot, it represents the whole image,costumes give the idea of the whole image
If a girl is wearing designer clothes, then viewers would get to know that she is wealthy. In our
Short film poor girl has no fashion sense, which showed that she has no money and no
KnowledgeAnd the rich lady wears designer shoes and bags and clothes
Our target audience are teenagers and adults, because everyone likes to watch social films, and
teenagers do not have a busy life, so they have lots of free time to watch any film
By looking at our codes and convention, we think that it does challenge real media today,
Because it has everything that a short film should have, planning, research everything.

Q. How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
Advertising
POSTER and REVIEW PAGE are quite effective in this sense, people mostly
Watch posters an plan to watch a money, if the poster is good, then people who don’t
Even know would get attracted
Where as in review page, people don’t get attracted like they do from the poster
And if once they get attracted through the pictures, then they might read it

My poster and review page are attractive because it goes with my short film it has everything
Which is shown in the movie

we feel that the combinations of both my main and ancillary texts are very effective.
All three of which were inspired by the research I have done into short and feature
films and how they are presented to the public on cinematic release. All three of our
texts have synergy which is the ability to link the three pieces of work together so fo
r example if you saw my film poster would you be able to tell that it goes with our film.
How we have accomplished synergy is by using the same style of text on theTitle on all
the texts, as well as using similar images on my film review and poster. we have also
created synergy by including similar if not the same images in all pieces as seen
As you can see both of our film review, poster and film use the same text style to create

relevant to each other and all centre around my main protagonist’s

I think thatour short film poster and movie review would belong in Gorilla film magazine,
this magazine focuses mainly on student and graduates work rather than industry and we
believe that our poster and review would be perfect in this magazine as industries do look
through this magazine and have contacts so this is the most likely place for my short film
to get recognized.The places the films get distributed to. Events such as awards, festivals
etc where work gets shown. How the company help sell your short film to the public.

Q.What have you learned from your audience’s feedback?

Before we started the construction work we did a little research on our target audiences.
We distributed a questionnaire among people in order to know, what are their likes and dislikes.
Therefore considering their view we applied that onto our video.
However after the short film was completed it was important to get audiences feedback.
We disturbed a questionnaire among various people after making them watch our short film.
Mostly we got a good response but obviously no one can be perfect.
One of the problems that were arising was the extra use of effects. Such as the moving of the
camera was not necessary in few shots. Otherwise the editing was good enough. During the
editing we had an issue about the time management that’s why we try using such effect and e
diting o it shorten it up. A clear view of editing has been shown on the blog.We have uploaded
both videos. Most of the people also claimed about about the acting of that rich lady (Samra)
who was hesitating while she was scolding the little child girlANSA.We got a good response on
how the editing and the placement of the shot were done. During editing of the film we did
what we like but some people said that some shots were not properly taken. So that’s why I
believe audience response is very important because what you like maybe others don’t.
The music work was quite appreciated as it suits the situation.The slow sad music mad e it
more depressing and attracted the audiences at the first.We did a interview as well.The link
has been provided in the blog.We showed our video to her. And we got good comments as
she really liked the story line because it was different and a small hidden issue in our society.
Even before we started doing our editing we had to change more than twice.
Feedback we got

The first time
when we render the video we showed this to our media teacher. She told us to make certain
change and which we actually did. I believe the feedback really help us improve our self
whenever if we got opportunity in our further studies.We can improve our self

We took interview of a teenager and an adult, their age group is our target audience
We showed them our short film, and we received a positive result, both of them liked, they
liked it because firstly it is reality, there is so much class difference nowadays, rich people
are getting richer and poor people are getting poorer and poverty.They told us that this
is emotional, and this is what we wanted.
They told us they would really like if this kind of movies are produce, people would actually
get to know that what kind of life are other people living

Research and planning
Media technology has been a great part in our research planning in throughout the
process of our A2 media studies portfolio. Initially as we started doing our work
considering our brief we looked up for a proper meaning of SHORT FILM on wikipedia

so much of information and ideas related to the video and both the

have search into other media products and finally we came up with the
idea of making a social realism genre short filmA short film that has
some message for the viewer.You tube and other student blogs was
also of a great help as it provided ) .By using internet I was able to
expand my research, whether it was magazine related, video related
etc. Just at the click of a finger I was able to get hundreds of pages of
information. But on the same hand we had a lot of issues as the internet
wasn’t working that’s why we couldn’t update our blog on regular basis
but we have provided every detail when we get access to the internet.

As I started doing my research on the target audience. We distributed a questionnaire which
means the file was been made on mircosoft word and then was printed out by the printer
On the other hand we made our blogs as well.This was the first time we made our blog on
www.blogger.com. it help us in keeping organize and our information in one place.
However, we used different ways to organize and make it more interesting by using other
sites such as www.Prezi.com and www.sildeshare.com This is a free programme to
upload documents from any Microsoft Office document as this is the easiest and quickest
option and also looks professional to go onto our blogs. Media technology especially
internet was been a great part in our research and planning.

Construction
Construction is one of the most important process of the our portfolio. Accordingly to
the brief we have to produce a short film poster and review page. Therefore we have
used two cameras on rent . which was a professional camera D5100 nikon, which posses
a digital screen, in which you can view the footage as your taking it, allowing us to
perfect our shots and the focuses we wanted to achieve. Also because of the high
quality and adjustable focus of this particular camera; we was able to switch the focus
and depth of the shot between two people. Without camera we wouldn’t be able to
make a short film. We also used tripod because it give stability in our work. It helped us
in making perfect shots. Whereas we were to record voice over we used mike and our
cell phone to record in it. Cell phone itself is a source of communication as we were
working in a group it made is easy to work together. therefore together with everything
we were able to complete our video.

Software was initially a big barrier for us as my short film was shot in High Definition
(1080i), meaning we the school computer's were not sufficient enough and did not have a
good enough graphics card to support the format in which we had shot my footage in.
Although the program (song vegas) was perfectly fine to edit, the computers were a
problem.After much initial hesitation decided use our own laptop to edit our short film,
this was because the better graphics card meant we could watch our raw footage back
smoothly and edit it easily.
We have used song vegas program to edit our film because it was easy to use because we
already have been working on that software and we know how to use it. It is a professional
software so we were quite comfortable with it. It help with me correct my mistake. Such as
we changed the brightness of the video in order to my it clear. On the other hand different
techniques and effects made our video to have a professional look.

We had to work a lot of our short film because the first time we render the video it was
too long, after that we cut it to make it till 5 minutes.
For the selection of the background music we look into some free music sides. Such as
www.cloudound.com and www.freesound.org.com
For our ancillary task we were to make one
poster and review page.Therefore we used
photoshop. However we were comfortable
using it as we have already have done
photoshop work in our AS portfolios. I have
used this site for fonts

really useful.

Once we were done with the editing we were to upload our video on facebook, you tube
and on our blog. However this will give us feedback on how we have produce our short
film. Such advance communication through face book has let us to share our video with
hundreds of people.
