Evaluation to Prelim task
- 1. Evaluation Preliminary task – The Book
- 2. Shots Used The video required many different shot types to be used so that the film showed the storyline to the best that it could be. We used: Establishing shot of the college Insert shot Medium close up Medium shot Master shot
- 3. Establishing Shot This shot was used so that we could establish where the action was taking place. It gives the audience the diegesis of the scene. This means the temporal, geographical and spacitial settings are developed. Master Shot The master shot is used so that everything that is in the scene can be shown. It allows for the audience to see the whole action of what is taking place. This shot was also used to establish exactly where in college the action was taking place. The insert shot showed the book on the fall after it had been dropped. This was used to show the audience what had happened as it was an important part of the story. It brought the action of dropping the book into the forefront of the audience’s mind. If they didn’t see the book being dropped they would understand what had happened from this shot. It highlights the significance of the book. Insert Shot Medium Close up This showed the reaction of person B after the book had been dropped. We decided on a medium close up as this would show the scene around the character as well as the reaction from him. Over the Shoulder shot The over the shoulder shot was used in a shot reverse shot structure. It was used to show a person’s reaction to what had happened as well as putting the audience in the action. It allows the audience to feel how the characters feel and understand what is going on.
- 4. Good Stuff After making this film we did have some good points. We managed to capture a variety of shot types from establishing shots to over the shoulder shots. We also edited the film quite well. The first half was better then the last, as the finished film looks smoother and has being edited better. This clip is an example of a good shot. It shows a medium shot of the book being picked up and then the camera pans up to see the expression of the character.
- 5. Bad Stuff The video was filmed over several days. Unfortunately this meant we didn’t have the same outfits for the different days. This meant that half of our film the actors had one item of clothing and the other half they wore different things. If I were to shoot it again I would make sure we were consistent in the clothing. The insert shot of the book was of the book on the floor with the book being open. The next shot which showed one character picking up the book showed the book being closed. Again we were inconsistent. Another problem that we had was with the over the shoulder shot. As we were new to this we were unsure how the best way to film this would be. When we did film it the filming was quite wobbly and the character that was been shown would walk in front of the over the shoulder shot person. This meant that the face of the person wasn’t always shown. The establishing shot to our film has people talking over the top of it. This means that the film doesn’t look professional and it ruins the effect of the shot. A further problem was concentrating when filming, sometimes it was hard to concentrate and you would end up laughing. This is an example of the clip before but shows the pan not going right. The camera looks wobbly and wonky, this shot was not used.
- 6. Problems The main problems that we encountered were inconsistency. For example a different shirt was worn on the different days and the location was slightly different as on the second day people were where we needed to film. Luckily we didn’t have any problems with the camera, tripod or software on the computer. The other problems we had were capturing the shots. For example capturing a good over the shoulder shot was difficult as when filming I found it hard not to wobble. We also changed the script slightly. We added a couple more shots than we had planned we did this to make a shot reverse shot structure. In the end we still didn’t quite manage this as more shots were needed. Another problem was staying focussed during the filming. Sometimes it was hard to concentrate and not laugh.
- 7. Screen Shots This is a screen shot of an insert shot featuring the book. This screen shot shows a medium close up reaction shot.
- 8. Lessons Learnt From making this video and doing the filming I have learnt many things. Firstly I’ve learnt how to use a video camera and tripod. I have also learnt how to edit things on windows movie maker and how capture the video to that said programme. I have also learnt what needs to be done in order to make a good film. For example wearing the same outfit when filming as well as how important the planning process is. I have learnt how to write a screenplay and make a storyboard. The planning process is very important because when you start filming you need to know what you have to film, where and when or everyone gets confused and you end up wasting time. By planning you make the whole process of filming simpler and more efficient.
- 9. Improvements The improvements that could be made are To wear the same clothes on all of the film Make sure details such as the book are accurate Add other shot types and editing techniques Plan better Re-shoot the establishing shot and not talk while its filming. The Film!
