Evaluation Part 1

In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
My film opening was under the genre action and there were many conventions that I stuck with. The
first thing that comes to mind is the sound, I used very traditional action film music which was fast
pace and very energetic. The music I used was from Kevin MacLeod and it was royalty-free. The
categories that this music is described are: action, dark, driving, epic, intense and suspenseful, all
these words I associate with an action film and the music of an action film. The first option on the next
slide shows the music that I used and another example of an action music from the film….. and both I
believe have very similar themes involved and sounds.
The narrative of my film is that the main character has been hiding out in the forest from the villain in
my opening. The villain turns up at the forest and the main character jumps from a tree and the sound
makes the villain react and the chase scene begins. In nearly all the action films that I have seen there
is a chase scene present, if it’s a running, car, motorbike or plane there seems to be at least one. To stay
with the conventions I wanted to have a chase scene in my opening. The safest chase scene and the
most realistic that I could achieve was a on foot chase scene so I but this at about 35 seconds into my
opening. In all action films are is a villain and a hero and this is one convention that I was defiantly
going to stick with.
With the editing I mainly used a simply cut because I wanted the shots to look quick and jumpy to link
to the action. Looking at the action films that I have watch such as: Fast Five, Star Trek Into Darkness,
Salt and Casino Royale, all use a simple cut and this is a convention that I stuck to as-well. The shots
in my chase scene have moving and non moving and I stayed with conventions because I have both. In
the films I have watch the camera work is mainly moving I mainly used a stationary camera, this I did
because I found moving the camera smoothly was very difficult but I do regret not have a couple more
shots that are moving, such as: pan, track or tilt. Because I didn’t use a lot of moving shoots, I didn’t
stay with the conventions of the shots in a chase scene.
In all but one film I looked at the main character is a man and this is where I challenged conventions. I
changed the main character to a woman because I wanted to show that women can be the hero and can
safe the world as well as men.
The setting of my opening, Epping Forest, went against conventions because most action films are set
in urban places because of the use of gadgets and the a busy city suits the action more. Looking at the
film The Hunger Games the setting was in a forest and this I thought would go well with my storyline. I
challenged conventions with the setting of my opening. The clothing I used for the villain I think stayed
with the conventions of a villain because the actor is wearing a hood and I have seen films such as
Harry Brown, were the villains wear hoods. The hero’s clothing I took inspiration from the film The
Hunger Games because the clothing, I thought, suited the setting.
When looking at title sequences from action films, like, Quantum of Solace, Star Trek Into Darkness
and Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, they all seemed to have a separate title sequence to the actual
footage and this I used with the convention. I produced a separate title sequence to the action and
placed at the end of the chase sense. The titles I used stayed with conventions to make it look as much
like an action film as possible. For the wording of the titles I looked at other film openings and used
what I thought would suit best for my opining.
