EWM Process Overview
SAP EWM Overview
SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) is used to efficiently manage inventory in the Warehouse
and for supporting processing of goods movement. It allows the company to control their Warehouse
inbound and outbound processes and movement of goods in the Warehouse.
With the help of SAP EWM all the goods movement are controlled by a warehouse management system
and provides you the tools to monitor warehouse activities. You can also manage additional functions in
the Warehouse like creating a serial number, batch number, vendor management inventory, resource
optimization etc. SAP Extended Warehouse Management allows you to not only monitor the quantity of
goods in Warehouse but to manage other critical functions and delivery of goods efficiently.
SAP Warehouse Management is opposite to Inventory management. Inventory management tells the
count of goods in the storage location and its physical location is unknown. Warehouse management
deals with goods movement and monitoring the physical location of the goods recorded with specific
documents.

is stored at that
level. This includes
data on stock

palletizing, and
stock removal.

Putaway and picking
strategies
Putaway Strategies
After Good Receipt, Placing the stocks in a bin is called as Putaway. Once we done the GR the
TR number will be generated in the background. TR will be converted into TO (Transfer Order).
During TO we need to confirm the final destination bin to store those stocks. Then warehouse
person will take the printout of that Transfer Order document and place the stocks in whatever
the bin we have decided in the transfer order and then they will confirm the Transfer order.
Picking / Stock Removal Strategies
After Goods Issue, we must pick the stocks from the Storage Bin. When a material is
removed from stock, it generally transferred to the goods issue interim storage
area. The information about the destination (interim storage type, interim
storage section, and interim storage bin) is either stored in the transfer
requirement or the system determines it from the WM movement type.
Storage Bin Management
You map your entire storage facilities in the Warehouse Management system. In doing so, you
can set up various storage facilities such as automatic warehouse, high rack storage areas, bulk
storage or fixed storage bins in various storage types, according to your needs.
You manage material stocks at storage bin level. You can define these storage bins according to
your own requirements. Every storage bin in your warehouse is mapped in the system. This lets
you monitor all warehouse movements at all times. You can follow where a certain material is in
your warehouse.
SAP Inventory Management and the SAP Warehouse Management system are fully
integrated. With its inventory procedure and recording of stock differences, the system ensures
that the inventory balance in Inventory Management always corresponds to the warehouse
stock in the WMS.

Planning and Monitoring
•The WMS offers you an
overview of all goods issues
and warehouse stocks. The
system supports you in
planning, monitoring, and
optimizing work processes.
For example, it gives you a
foresighted view of the
workload in the coming days
or allows you to intervene in
good time during critical
warehouse processes, so that
you can execute warehouse
movements on time. Via the
RF monitor, you get an up-to-
date picture of all of the
activities in the warehouse,
which means that you can
control the actual work in the
warehouse using the RF
monitor.
Return
•Warehouse Movements
•You process all goods movements that affect
your warehouse via the WMS. This includes
goods receipts, goods issues, stock transfers,
material staging for production, automatic
replenishment, managing hazardous materials,
and processing stock differences in your
warehouse.
•The WMS optimizes warehouse capacities and
material flows using putaway and stock removal
strategies, which you can adjust to suit your
individual needs, or by using storage units.
Return
•Radio Frequency Connection
•In order to structure the work in the warehouse efficiently
and cost-effectively, you control the warehouse workers' work
steps clearly and simply via mobile radio-frequency terminals.
•Radio frequency connection (RF connection) to
mobile date entry achieves quick and flawless data transfer.
The RF machines receive data directly from the SAP system
and transfer data back to the system. Using barcodes, you can
record information to be recorded and verify it. This means
that you ensure a high standard of quality in your warehouse.
Return
•Warehouse Control
•WMS also has an interface to external systems
(warehouse control units), so that you can
integrate automatic putaway, stock removal
systems or fork lift control systems into the
warehouse management system for all
warehouse movements with the help of this ALE
interface.
Return
In Warehouse Management (WM), a complete physical warehouse is defined under a single
warehouse number . Using the warehouse number, you can manage several individual
warehouse buildings that, together, form a complete warehouse complex.
Storage Type is a physical or logical subdivision of a warehouse. A storage type consists of
one or several storage bins. Under the Warehouse number we have different kind of storage type. (like
heavy part or small parts or based on material types or high rack and low rack or self-rack storage.
Storage section is an organizational subdivision of a storage type, that groups together
storage bins with similar features for the purpose of putting away stock. The criteria for
grouping bins can be defined on a user-individual basis, for example, heavy parts, bulky
materials, fast-moving items, slow-moving items.
A storage type generally contains several storage spaces or slots. These are called storage
bins in Extended Warehouse Management. The storage bin is the smallest available unit of
space in a warehouse. The storage bin therefore describes the position in the warehouse
where the goods are or can be stored.
This is the stock of any material with the same features in one storage bin. The system
manages different batches of a material as different quants. The quantity of a quant can be
increased by an addition to existing stock. Quants can be created or deleted solely through
goods movements.
Warehouse Number
Each warehouse consists of a warehouse number which is at the highest level in a
warehouse management system. Each warehouse number consists of a sub
structure that maps the warehouse relationship.
•Storage Type
There are different types of storage where
products are physically stored in a warehouse such
as open storage, goods issue and goods receipt,
racks.
1. Inventory Management
• Advance Inventory tracking and management Capabilities.
• Real-time visibility into stock levels and location
• Support for various storage strategies, such as high rack storage, block
storage, etc.
2. Warehouse Planning & Optimization
• Efficient warehouse layout design and resource planning.
• Dynamic slotting to optimize storage space.
• Workforce management and labor optimization.
3. Inbound & Outbound Processes
• Advance support for inbound processes like goods receipt, quality
inspection, and putaway.
• Outbound processes include order picking, packing, and shipping.
• Integration with transportation management for seamless coordination
between warehousing and transportation.
4. RFID & Automation Integration
• Integration with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) for improved
tracking and visibility.
• Support for automation technologies like conveyors systems, robotics, and
automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
5. Integration with SAP ERP & other systems
• Seamless integration with SAP ERP for end-to-end business processes.
• Integration with other systems, such as SAP S/4 hana, as well as non-SAP
systems.
6. Reporting
• Comprehensive reporting tools for monitoring and analyzing warehouse
performance.
