Ø In his essay “Racial Segregation,” William Pickens asserts, "If passing for white will get
a fellow better accommodations on the train, better seats in the theatre, immunity from
insults in public places, and may even save his life from a mob, only idiots would fail to
seize the advantages of passing, at least occasionally if not permanently" (3) Write an
essay of four to six pages arguing for or against racial passing. Use support from four of
the texts we have read so far, our discussions, and your own insights. Formatting: MLA

Ø Stone Butch Blues offers many ways to read the challenges of growing to adulthood.
Each of the conflicts Jess and her friends face speaks to readers differently, and for this
reason, I offer you several choices. In a thesis driven essay of four to six pages, respond
to one of the prompts provided to you. You need only the primary text for this essay, but
you may use others if you want to incorporate additional support. Remember, you can
also draw on your own experiences and knowledge to discuss, explain, and analyze your
topic. You will need a works cited page even if you only use Stone Butch Blues.
Formatting: MLA style. Submission method: Kaizena.

Prompt
  Introduction

Ø For this research paper, consider trickster tales and trickster or trickster-like characters
from our reading. Do they meet the criteria to be categorized as “tricksters”? Which
measuring stick do we use to determine if they are or not? Who or what are they in a
modern society? When and why do they appear? Is there a relationship between tricksters
and gender and ethnicity? Do these modern tricksters, as Lock asserts, help us “better
understand ourselves, and the perhaps subconscious aspects of ourselves that respond to
the trickster’s unsettling and transformative behavior”? How? Or, do these trickster tales
and trickster or trickster-like characters serve another purpose? Which? Your finished
text should be between five and seven pages, excluding the Works Cited page.
Formatting: MLA style. Submission method: Kaizena.
