- 1. COSTUMES Nikki J – The Way You Do Hoodies are a key part of the R&B genre and will be one of the costumes we use in our music video. Hoodies add a form of mystery to the artist, what are they perhaps hiding under the hood. The hoodie is also seen as an icon of the latest trends which could be seen as a sign that the artist has wealth, money being another key part of the R&B genre. We will ask our actor to bring something similar to this on the day of filming. Therefore there will be no cost for this item. Baggy Jeans portray a sense of scruffiness that is ideal for the genre, but at the same time again represents wealth. Jeans, especially designer brands, can often cost a lot and could be a sign of having the latest fashion trends. Jeans have been worn in the past in several R&B Music Videos so we know it would be following the expectations of the genre. We will ask our actor to bring something similar to this on the day of filming. Therefore there will be no cost for this item. We understand that tattoos are important for the R&B music video industry. Therefore this is something we hope to include in our music video. Tattoos allow the chance for the artist to express a sense of individuality which helps add brand appeal to the artist with its own image. Due to the fact that we cannot tattoo our actors, we will look at either drawing tattoos on with a pen, which may look effective from a distance, or alternatively purchasing a tattoo sleeves or stickers to place on our actors. We will look to spend around £3 – £5 on this item. After doing some more research into our chosen genre, we believe that sunglasses are a vital element of the costume for men. The sunglasses display an element of mystery, as if the artist has something to hide. The use of sunglasses is also a sign of wealth, another important element of R&B Music Videos. We already have sunglasses at home and will ask our actor to bring a pair, if they have one, as well. From these we will then pick the best pair. This means we are expecting no cost for this item. We will be looking to place our artist in a black dress as seen here. We think that a black dress would represent mystery and suspicion, something that could often be seen in an R&B Music Video. We would look to show some of the artist’s skin, but at the same time not too much. R&B is a very sexy genre and therefore the need to show skin in a sexual way is a key element of the genre. However, we are making the music video for our artist, Nikki J, who has expressed an interest to not have too much skin showing in this provocative way. We will ask our artist to provide a dress that she feels comfortable wearing. Therefore we will expect no costs for this item. There is one section of the music video, in which we will see our artist in a tracksuit with her hair all over the place. This is one way in which we will be going against the genre expectations. usually R&B is associated as a glitzy genre full of designer items and luxury clothing. Therefore the use of a plain tracksuit is one way in which we are going against this typical expectation of the genre. This will also give the viewers a chance to see the artist in a personal way, not only as a star but also as an everyday woman. We also see that the lover appreciates her for who she really is and not just under her star status cover. We will ask the artist whether she has any tracksuit bottoms or pyjamas to use for this scene, we therefore expect no major costs in the use of this i tem. We will be looking to place our artist in a pair or several pairs of high heels throughout the course of our music video. Even though the pair photographed here is not an exact representation, we will be looking to mirror this style as much as possible. High heels are a key art of the R&B genre as so much of what the genre is about can be seen through this item. The use of expensive or glittering high heels is a display of money and wealth, while showing elements of the skin could be seen as sexual, another element of the R&B Music Video genre that we will attempt to match in our production.
