Conventions are elements of
content which are recognizable
from similar texts
Form is made up of the
elements of structure which
give a media text its ‘shape’ and
meaning
The performance element is a form used in music videos to help create a
structure. We used a performance element so that we could showcase our
artist and her personality. She was a sassy strong female and this was
communicated through her dance skills. This also demonstrated that this was a
pop video that would entertain the people watching it. This helps create a star
image as a beautiful Mediterranean girl with attitude, she is fresh and new on
the market and ready to stomp on anybody in her way. Star Image is defined by
Dyer as the semi mythological set of meanings constructed around music
performers in order to sell the performer to the audience. This image is very
overwhelming and can which can be easily be idolized by audiences and
therefore will be easy to sell.
The performance element is similar to that of Beyoncé's Run the World (Girls)
where there is strong powerful dancing and gestures to bombard the audience
with Effy’s powerful image.
• We used this form to help promote a glamorous strong independent
woman image. The narrative of the video is about a post apocalyptic world
in which only the most powerful girls have survived, in this world females
rule and control boys, there is only one boy left and they use him as a
captive sex slave for breeding more females. This helps us relate to our
target audience which is teenage girls, it will help insecure girls feel
powerful and further fuel strong independent girls. Because this is so
retable for so many teens it helps sell this artist to them so they become
“fan girls”. This helps create the star image paradox of
ordinary/extraordinary.
• This is similar to Britney Spears’s star image as a talented independent
woman which has been proven to sell very successfully.
use of narrative
Artistic Camera Work
• The use of our artistic camera work was good for creating an atmosphere.
We deliberately set up a tight unconventional frame with the three
characters in it. This created a claustrophobic feeling in the studio which
was suitable as it was supposed to be in an underground bunker.
• This is similar to the grimes “Go” music video where the camera was
constantly at a close up however in Grimes's video they used a fish eye to
further create the intense intimate atmosphere which proved to be very
successful.
Conspicuous Use of Lighting
• This light is good for creating a meaning and to tell the audience the genre
of the song in the video. In our video for the shots of the dance sequence
we used very minimalistic set and just had the dancers in plain clothes.
The lighting that was used were streams of backlights, this was good in
creating meaning as although our song was a pop song it also had a dance
element and this allowed the audience to focus on the clear cut and
precise dance moves. The fact that it was minimalistic in terms of props
and set it outlines their movement and dance moves. This way it makes
the product easier to market as a dance song allowing us to get a wider
range of consumers which like dance music. Although Effie has more
organic ideology of creativity as her record company found her edgy party
image appealing they also introduced a synthetic dance element to her
video so that it would be easier to sell to a larger range of people
• This shot is similar to Grimes’s “Go” music video as they also had a
effective backlighting which emphasized the unison military-like dance
attitude which focused on their movement rather then just the artist.
Breaking The Rules of Continuity Editing
• Breaking the rules of continuity editing can be an important part of a video as it
draws attention to the professional process. In our video we had the shots of
different visually grand locations where the same characters were wearing
different stylish outfits. For example on moment our Artist would be in front of a
London bus wearing a red coat and then a second later she’d be in front of a
pyramid wearing a dress, we would keep cutting back and forth from these two
locations completely destroying a linear form of shots being placed together. This
bombarded the viewer with many different elements that would keep them
entertained as it gave a visual equivalent of what the audience was hearing due to
the rhythmic editing of cutting to the beat. This also showcased the characters
style and the feel of the video. This also shows the audience that it was quite a
large production giving the video itself more value making it easier to sell.
• We see this done in many different videos such as Ariana Grande’s “Breaking free
Video” she changes from being inside a spaceship to into space wearing a
completely different attire.
Costumes
• Having many different costumes in a music video is a good way to display the star image
of the artist. It can give the artist a certain look which can be easily marketed to females
to idolize over or can be sexualized for boys to worship. This can also help create the
star image paradox of her being ordinary and yet extraordinary. Richard Dyer
emphasized the importance of this as fans will be able to relate to her and may even
attempt replicating her yet because she is extraordinary she will be able to spark the
interest of many consumers gain a large following ensuring that she will make a lot of
money. and In our video we had her in different outfits suiting the locations she was
in. The outfits showed that she is also a fashion icon as well as helped the narrative of
the video, in the London bus scene she wore the royal guards uniform and in the
Egyptian scene she wore an Emperoress outfit, these outfits were sexy yet also showed
show she was the leader and a dominant character.
• Outfit changes are a big part of many music videos, for example Cheryl Cole wore a
Royal Guard outfit in her music video “fight for this love” as a way to show were English
fans her patriotism and further strengthening her fan base.
