debilitating and sometimes lethal mental condition called post traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD), while a common co occurring condition, major depression, can
lead to suicide ideation (Hoge and Castro, 2012, p. 671). The increase in the
prevalence of traumatic brain injury is also contributing to the increase in suicide
rates, as these veterans try to cope with their war injuries while returning to their

Modern Day Baseball ( Lanham ) Essay
November 24TH, 1887, football fans used boxing gloves and broomsticks to play
the very first, official, game of softball. Just a little over four decades earlier,
Alexander Cartwright, the father of baseball formalized the rules, or codes, of
townball . What is townball ? Who exactly is Alexander Cartwright? Moreover,
what on earth does this have to do with fast pitch softball? These are all valid
questions you may or, may not have right now. Townball or base are both older
colloquial terms used to describe, what would become American baseball. Many news
sources such as the Westchester Journal and multiple St. Louis City Directories
have evidence of the use of such terms, supporting the notion that Alexander
Cartwright is the man who, in 1846, wrote the first and most basic formalized code
for what would become modern day baseball (Lanham). Cartwright is not to be
mistaken for the falsely proclaimed father of baseball, Abney Doubleday.
Doubleday was a General in the U.S. Army at the time and was not in
Cooperstown, Pennsylvania when he was said to have invented baseball in 1839.
On the other hand, a YMCA official named Walker Hakanson is credited for
coining the name softball as opposed to names the preceded it such as kitten ball,
mush, and women s baseball. The exact origins of both sports are hard to identify, as
there are hundreds of stick and ball sports in the world, one of the most common
possibilities for an ancestor sport is cricket (Lanham). Both sports

Lean On Me ( Norman Twain Productions, 1989)
The movie Lean on Me was published in 1989. The movie depicts a time period
when drug use/ abuse, and violence was very prevalent at Eastside High the inner city
high schools in Paterson New Jersey. Eastside HS having these challenges created a
societal view of low expectations for the students that attended the school. The
students that attended the high school were predominately African American and
Latinos, and because of their race they were considered minority groups with low
social economic status and/ or expectations. Throughout the movie the diversity of
race, and social economical statuses were factors mentioned. Another important factor
that the movie only touched on slightly was the challenges with crack cocaine. The 80
s was an era when crack cocaine was introduced to the inner city communities,
causing much destruction to the foundation of families that had members that
indulged in its use. This caused the lack of parent engagement and support systems
for youths. Many of the youths in the movie was raising themselves, which included
finding the means to support their and/ or their family s basic everyday needs such
as: food, clothing, and shelter. That alone opened the door to negative influences like
drug dealing, drug use, drug abuse, and violence. Many of the students at Eastside HS
was more focus on everyday survival, then the importance of having an education and
the growth that it would bring them. The

DoppelgГ¤nger In Frankenstein
Shelley begins by comparing Frankenstein s actions and thoughts with those of the
Creature, demonstrating that within that of one there exists a spectre of the other.
Given that doppelgГ¤nger are any set of entities which reflect aspects of each other,
it is clear that Shelley intends the two to be as such. Frankensteininitially describes his
curiosity with the natural world as among the earliest sensations [remembered by
him] due to the world being to him a secret, which [he] desired to divine , including
the hidden laws of nature (Chapter 2). The use of the word divine carries tremendous
connotation, as it implies the presence of supernatural intervention; from a young
age, Frankenstein has imagined himself as having God like powers and able to
glimpse the machinations of the hidden laws of nature , all due to his curiosity....
Frankenstein s belief is echoed and confirmed to quite an extent by the actions of
the creature, which begins life as tabula rasa (consistent with the classical
epistemological blank slate theory popularised immediately before Shelley s period),
but over time acquires both the ability to converse with exceptional eloquence and to
subsist on meagre means as a societal leper; this demonstrates one aspect of the
Doppelbeziehung (the relationship between doppelgГ¤nger) where Frankenstein s
purely conjectural beliefs are taken by his Creature and found to be applicable.
Shelley then describes this Doppelbeziehung more explicitly: the creature bemoans
the self inflicted degradation of his virtue after he murders his creator, stating that his
[malignity] is even more tragic than that of the biblical Devil, who even had friends
and associates in his desolation... [while the Creature stands] alone (chapter

Civil disobedience is the refusal to obey civil laws in an effort to induce change in
governmental policy or legislation. Thoreau s infamous ideas on Civil
Disobedience, written in 1849, have been monumental in the fight for change. It has
helped influence change anywhere from the 1940s fight against Danish resistance,
to the 1950s and McCarthyism. Thoreau s words have helped lead the way to
freedom. It has made the people of the world think about how they are being

for three main reasons which are that he is read around the world, it had to do with
