This document provides information about the Exploration ICEBLOCK project, which will involve scientists diving through holes in Antarctic sea ice to explore coastal sea floor life and ecosystems. The expedition will begin in Christchurch, New Zealand and travel to Scott Base in Antarctica, then to sites along the coast including New Harbour and Cape Evans. At these sites, scientists will use ice holes to dive under the sea ice and study the many slow-growing shellfish and other animals that live on the ocean floor, seeking to understand how these communities may be impacted by changes in sea ice thickness, pollution, or carbon dioxide levels. Students are encouraged to ask questions to learn more about the project and environment.
