My film is about an unstable, psychotic artist who murders people just to satisfy
his need to paint them. He is seen with a shrine of all his previous work that is well
documented through his photography over the years. His character is portrayed in
a way that would make my audience feel very uncomfortable since he personally
addresses my viewers by his narration. He is seen as a ruthless and an inhuman
being– a bit like Norman Bates from the movie ‘Psycho (1960)’.
‘ t h e c a n v a s ’
I chose to name my film ‘the canvas’ as it is a short but catchy title. The word
canvas relates to artists, creativity and a new start. It manages to give a hint of
what the film could be about, but yet, it doesn’t give away too much to the point
where there is no suspense for my audience.
The name of my production company will be called ‘Ellipsis Films’ and I chose this
because the ellipsis symbol is three dots that are placed right after one another. It
is used when there is more to a text or when the writer is trying to achieve
suspense.

I have chosen my target audience to be within the ages of 15 to 58 as my film
genre suits the age bracket and it is quite simple to understand in terms of the
narrative. I plan on targeting both the genders, however, I do feel that this would
be more appealing to the males as it includes violence– which I gathered from the
questionnaire I had carried out, that majority of the males preferred ‘action’ and
‘horror’ over the other genres.
In terms of psychographics, I would say that my film would attract the ‘strugglers’
as they, by definition, seek escape and are disorientated.
This film would be a 15 as it contains violent scenes as well as a disturbing
storyline.
g e n r e
The genre of my film is psychological horror and the way I will make this evident
throughout my film is through the use of music, narration, editing, mise-en-scene
and shot types. The font that I will be using for titles would be a rough and grunge
typeface with a hint of red so it could denote the implication of blood within the
film.
t e c h n i c a l c o n s i d e r a t i o n s
I plan on using many close-up shots of my characters in the film as this would help
the audience to empathise with them (depending on which character my camera
focuses on). For example the close-up of the ‘corpse’ would evoke a feeling of pity
and sadness within the audience as they realise he is just another helpless victim.
Within my opening sequence, I will use fast edits such as jump cuts and fast
cutting. This will help keep the viewers on their feet as it increases the height of
the film. The sound techniques that I will be using are contrapuntal sounds since it
will confuse the audience and divert their attention from the serious aspects of the
film.
