The face and scalp are composed of multiple layers of skin, connective tissue, muscles and other structures. The face contains important features for communication like the eyes, nose and mouth. It is innervated by the trigeminal nerve for sensation and the facial nerve for muscle movement. The scalp has five layers including skin, connective tissue and periosteum covering the skull. Both areas drain into cervical lymph nodes and veins have numerous connections to allow alternate drainage paths. Injuries can potentially lead to infections spreading dangerously within the head and neck region.
