Getting ready for B2 First Writing Part 2
• Content
focuses on how well the task has been completed; for
example, has all the important information been included in
the piece of writing?
• Communicative Achievement
focuses on how appropriate the writing is in terms of genre; for
example, what sort of text do you have to produce – a letter, a
report, a review, an essay? Each one requires a different
format and has a different function.
• Organisation
focuses on the way the text is organised; for example, is the
information presented coherently and are the ideas connected
with cohesive devices or linking words?
• Language
focuses on vocabulary and grammar; for example, how
accurate is the text and is there a range of complex and simple
structures and vocabulary?
Task: look at the list of items below and
match each of them to the area where they
are assessed
1. Are there many grammar or spelling mistakes?
2. Is the handwriting easy to read?
3. Is the writing well organised?
4. Has the student answered the question fully?
5. Does the writing achieve its purpose?
6. Are linking words used effectively?
7.Does the writing include extra information to provide more details?
8. Is formal or informal language used correctly?
9.Does the writer use interesting vocabulary?
10.Does the writer use complex structures, such as I had been looking?
11.Does the writer use referencing words like these, those and that
effectively? Getting ready for B2 First Writing Part 2

Content
• All content is relevant and the target reader is
fully informed.
• The candidate responds to the questions that
have been asked and gives details about the
places David’s friends can visit (Baltic Sea;
museum of our local history).
• The email explains that the best mode of
transport is bike (because of small distances
between the places and views are amazing).
Getting ready for B2 First Writing Part 2
Communicative Achievement
• The conventions of the task are used to hold
the reader’s attention. The response is written
in an informal, friendly but polite tone, which is
appropriate for the task. The conventions for
opening and closing an email of this type are
used appropriately, as well as standard phrases
for communication to a friend (You wrote that;
What do you think about it; I look forward to
hearing from you soon; Best wishes).
• Straightforward ideas are communicated.
Information and advice are given and the
overall tone is enthusiastic and positive.
Getting ready for B2 First Writing Part 2
Organisation
• The text is well organised and coherent and
uses the input email well to structure the
response (I’m glad your friends are visiting; I
have many ideas; In my opinion; My area
includes also; which many; Your friends could;
You wrote that; That’s great).
• A variety of linking words (because of) and
cohesive devices, such as substitution and
referencing, are used across some sentences
and to connect simple ideas.
Getting ready for B2 First Writing Part 2
Language
• There is a range of everyday vocabulary used
which is relevant to the topic (beautiful Baltic
Sea; many tourist visit; in this season; Tickets
are not so expensive).
• There is a range of simple and some complex
grammatical forms used with a good degree of
control, e.g. modals, present and past forms of
verbs.
• There are some errors (My area includes also;
send me some your ideas) and some spelling
mistakes (sunbath; memorise; intrested) but
these do not impede communication.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Activity 3.2: To raise awareness of the expected performance at this level by providing students with examples of Part 2 task types
  • #4: Elicit from students which the 4 assessment criteria you analysed in the previous class were. Then show them slide.
  • #5: To check how much they remember about each criterion, ask them to match each criterion with its description. You might use the stamp tool on Zoom to allow students to draw arrows to indicate answers.
  • #6: Use this slide to clarify any doubts students might have about the assessment criteria.
  • #7: Show students the questions on the slide above and tell them those are things which are assessed in the writing paper. Ask them to read them and match them with the area where they are assessed. Allow them 5 minutes to do the task individually and then elicit answers.
  • #8: Use this sllide to check and elicit from students why each item is assessed in the area indicated. Make sure that students realise that this is not a complete list of what is assessed within each aspect.
  • #9: Tell students you are now going to focus on a Part 2 sample answer.
  • #10: Remind students about the Assessment scales you analysed in the previous lesson and what they remember about them Go over the different criteria and what is assessed in each of them. Call students’ attention to the key differences between a 5, 3 and 1 in each criterion. N.B: it’s essential that you familiarize yourself with the assessment saclae and refer to it when marking your students’ compositions an givng them feedback. See the Cambridge English Assessing Writing performance - Level b2 pdf file on the eboard.
  • #11: Put students in breakout romos again and ask them to discuss the question on the slide above. .
  • #12: Put students in breakout rooms. Allow 5 minutes for them to complete the task.
  • #13: Elicit students´ comments on each criterion before showing them the examiner comments on the slides.
  • #17: Go over the marks awarded for each criteriorn by refering back to the sample answer. Use the B2 writing assessment scales while doing so.
  • #18: Set this task for homework. Then tell students you will now have a look at the kind of feedback they will receive from you when they write their Part 2 tasks.
