Editor's Notes

  • #4: *Provide a PD plan focused heavily on providing system leaders with a coaching and mentoring model to support the work to integrate technology in the instructional process. *A cascade model of PD will also aim to help school-based administrators to develop staff capacity.  *Division leaders will learn how to utilize and leverage insidePSD as a major vehicle to collaborate, communicate, find and access information as part of the process of integrating technology into the instructional process.
  • #5: We will have a shared vision of what effective technology integration looks like at the division, school and classroom levels. Each site will have a knowledgeable and skilled team to promote and support technology integration.Divisional and school leadership capacity will enable continuous improvement in technology integration throughout the school division.Technology will be viewed by students and staff as a tool to support learning. The Scholaris Learning Gateway will be accepted and used by key stakeholders (administrators, staff, students and parents) as a responsive and reliable learning, communication and collaboration environment.Students will be better prepared for life after high school.
  • #6: A critical thinking and assessment activity – fill out a vocabulary chart. Originated from Peace Wapiti School Div and shared on Jan. 12th, 2010 by Wally D. to the AISI cohort group.Personal definition – found on SLItech team discussion site.Other boxes should be completed throughout the session by you using the stickies found at your table.
  • #7: Using Tech w Classroom Instruction that Works overview. Chapter 1 – setting objectives. Participants have already Chapters 2 and 3 – feedback and recognition. Furthering the understanding of instructional strategies.
  • #8: Review facets of using SLITech project site. GO TO http://inside.psd70.ab.ca : topics, how to get an ALERT ME and importance of input into discussion area.
  • #9: Providing feedback – have participants with a partner go to etherpad and input their own thoughts on how technology is being harnessed to give feedback and recognition …..(then input this information into a wordle)http://etherpad.com/1vh5GOb5U1Corrective in natureTimelyCriteria-specificAnd student provided
  • #10: The more immediate the feedback (go to SNL 1 min video – an example of when feedback was not as immediate as it should have been), the greater its impact on student/teacher/admin behavior.
  • #11: Examples of technology resources that facilitate and enhance the process of providing feedback for teachers are: MWord and Etherpad
  • #12: Microsoft word – track changes, insert comments, save in a group folder/googledocs, Flesch-Kincaid Readability Scale, built-in thesaurus. Katherine will now share her insights to usage of MWord at her site.
  • #13: Classroom response systems – Quizdom,Senteo, online polls/surveys- whole group discussion and some demos.
  • #14: http://smarttech.com/recorder/To open – go to SMART programs – open Notebook Recorder and then open Notebook 10 (either already prepared). Click record, talk and stop. It instantly will ask you to save a wmv file. Easy to use.
  • #15: Administrator blogs are being used, mainly to communicate with staff, students, parents and the community. Netvibes is an example of an RSS aggregator which puts all the blogs you follow onto ONE page. An easy way to skim to the articles. If you are interested in blogging to communicate with your stakeholders, or with other school admin, by reading and commenting on what they are saying or by creating your own blog. Where to find bloggers? http://supportblogging.com/Links+to+School+Bloggers ie. Scott McLeod’s blog – annual Leadership Day – go to blog, read questions. You Gotta Listen to the Kidshttp://dogtrax.edublogs.org/2009/07/11/leadership-day-2009/ While some admin are blogging about issues of the day and what blogging has done for them, and others are blogging about how they use tech to do their job, imagine the PR possibilities of blogging about your school. In groups/partners: take time to type a list of uses that school leaders might have for blogging on http://etherpad.com/TYgubAycyy
  • #16: Wikis – for SLItech: https://inside.psd70.ab.ca/Collaboration/Projects/default.aspx – go to WIKI and add any further uses of WIKIS for school leaders.Check out the ever evolving http://psdtechpd.wikispaces.com Ie. http://saintambrose.wikispaces.com/List started (SLItech leaders to add)* enhance communication and increase collaboration* engage others in planning and decision making* collaboratively develop agendas for meetings, plans for PD (post initial agenda and others add to the wiki instead of emailing you; therefore only ONE document is being worked on!!)* record deliberations/decisions made by a group over time* document history of committee work* the power of input and collaboration is great
  • #17: IM – instantaneous info sharing – GoogleTalk (Have all sign up for GTalk, add contacts and chat w/each other. Also speak about the video feature.), Webcam can be ordered through Linda Lee.
  • #18: Adobe Pro – e-portfolios “ePortfolios are an important response to trends changing the nature of learning. Increasingly, ePortfolios are removing the logistical challenges of performance assessment that derailed large-scale projects in the past by incorporating digital media as it becomes an increasingly important part of assessing student learning.”
  • #19: Blog – eportfolios and intro video (1 min)Show example using Acrobat Pro – my example and the HS example. Hand out free info on thumb drives!!! ONE per school.Adobe Digital School http://tv.adobe.com/show/adobe-digital-school-collection/ scroll down to E-portfolios (16 episodes)For further information, http://www.erlc.ca is offering a session on e-portfolios on February 1st from 9am – 3:30pm at Elmwood School.Admin e-portfolioshttps://sites.google.com/a/wvde.k12.wv.us/principals-leadership-institute-class-of-2010/Home/tech-time/eportfolio-examples Show Amber Boeckmann – 21st Century Curriculum ( Focus questions, presentation, activities, implementation, documentation, celebrations, challenges, implications for my school)As a school leader, e-portfolios are a way to communicate the progress of your school by documenting the success of the programs you started; can be a way to manage the documents involved in your EdPlan and AERR. They provide a means to assess students, teachers and leaders themselves. In all cases, deciding on a purpose for using e-portfolios at your school is the MOST important step. Do you want students or teachers or school leaders to create e-portfolios to document their work, or reflect on their work or collect their work for purposes of assessment or for all three? What are the particular outcomes/goals for having e-portfolios?....etc.

  • #27: Just because Mword, Etherpad, Classroom Resp Systems, e-portfolios, Blogs, Wikis, VC’s, Voicethread, and Podcasts are available and for the most part, easy to use, it doesn’t mean that every one of them will suit your needs. You will need to do some research and try some of them in order to see what suits your needs and works well within your context.Anne Davis of Georgia State University makes a point about why admin should be knowledgeable about the tools we have discussed today: “ Sometimes when I see all the stuff that is posted on blogs by teenagers, I find myself wishing that someone had given them some guidance, Lots of them are just not thinking. We need to build these types of things into our discussions in our classrooms. I like to think that good teaching about responsible weblog (etc.) would help. We will need courageous leaders who are willing to explore the strengths and weaknesses of this medium. Our students live in a world where they will have access to increasingly more powerful communications tools. Who should teach them how to manage the power of these tools? We have come fact to face with technologies that are now threatening the existing culture of teaching and learning. We will either try to defend the status quo or we will carefully analyze the risks of moving forward to provide powerful role models for our students.” (from November, A. (2006).
