LINE
1. The shape of a work of Art may be
defined by Line.
2. Line have many qualities which the
artist exploits.
3. They maybe short or long, fine or thick,
heavy or light, wavy or jagged, straight or
curve.
4. They usually delineate shape.
Used across or within shape
Line may move in several
directions.
When the line continues in
only one direction we call it a
straight Line
The Definition of a Line
A line is a linear marks made with a pen
or brush
Types of Lines
H o r i z o n t a l
Vertical
Diagonal
How Lines Convey the
Mood
The direction of the line usually
convey the mood of a drawing
Horizontal lines show how the drawing
arecalm and quiet
Vertical lines suggest more of a potential
formovement
Diagonal lines suggest how the
movement can give more of a feeling
of vitality
 Results when there is gradual change of
direction.
Because it is gradual, it shows fluidity.
We see this in curves of the woman's
figure.
In the rounded petals of flowers, and in
the shape of the crescent moon.
The Curve line gives us a feeling of
grace and movement.

When the change in direction is
abrupt line results the abruptness
creates tension and an impression of
chaos, confusion, or conflict.
Line, whatever their direction, control
our eyes movement and help us relate
the various elements in a work of art
with one another.
What do lines do?
They enhance comprehension
andreadability
Can be a border or divider between
elements
Can be a border or divider
around elements
Lines can provide an anchor to
holdmovements on a page
Lines make optical illusions
