 This novel won the Nobel price. 
 Hemingway present life of 
an old man.
About Santiago : 
 Protagonist of the novel. 
Old fisherman. 
His knowledge of the sea and its creatures of 
his craft. 
Brave, confidence, cheerful and optimistic. 
A resourceful person.
Man VS. Nature : 
Santiago VS Marlin 
Santiago VS the shark 
His loves for living creatures 
He talks about 
- Birds as friend. 
- The shark as personal 
enemies.
Man VS Man : 
 Santiago VS younger fish . 
 He does not have any friend other than the boy 
because no one respect him . 
 Mock at Santiago’s bad luck .
Skillful Fisherman: 
 Santiago uses all his strength . 
 He attack with harpoon and knife .
Life’s climax : 
 He lives his life with great passion . 
 He has gone eighty four days without catching a fish . 
 The joke of his small village . 
 Age – poverty – loneliness . 
 Humble , long suffering courageous . 
 Failure experience . 
 He loses his giant fish . 
 “A Fight for survival”.
An optimistic, humble , patient, brave and 
determined man : 
 His hopes for next day . 
 He never regards himself as the best . 
 Eighty four days patiently waits for every turn . 
 Despite the luck of food and water and his pain .
Over all views : 
 A hero exhibits “Grace under pressure”. 
 A hero is a person of action . 
 Santiago - ‘every man’. 
 Never loses his self confidence and his faith . 
 He was working like Youngman .(youth and old age).
