What Is Development ?
• According to Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-
General of the United Nations, development
is “life without poverty and without
inequalities…respect of human rights, and
the belief in governance and in good and
strong institutions”.
• For the period 2015-2030, the aim of the
World Bank, United Nations and other
related bodies, is to encourage and assist
member states to broaden their scope of
development towards achieving sustainable
development goals.
• As the line between ‘international’ and
‘national’ continues to blur, it is increasingly
important for member states to unify their
development efforts and approaches, and
also to share insight and experiences with
each other along the journey.

• The 17 Sustainable Development
Goals are the successor of the eight
Millennium Development Goals that
were set in 2000.
• The goals were formulated in an
attempt to try and understand the
changing global landscape and access
the changes that need to be made in
the best interest of all countries
internationally.
• The goals can be seen on the picture
to the left.
• “The Sustainable Development Goals is a reflection of the situation in the world today. They
reflect that we need peace, they reflect that we need development, they reflect that we need
respect of human rights and rule of law.” Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the
United Nations

The SDGs provide member countries with a unified sense
of direction and benchmarks to work towards.
They operate almost like a GPS system, charting the path
that needs to be followed to achieve success.
Direction and Benchmarks
The categorization of the goals helps countries to readily
identify the types of financing that may be needed for
different areas of development. It also evokes discussion
about the domestic and international sources of
financing development.
Financing
The goals represent a whole new, transformational way
of thinking ideal for the complexity that now exists in the
world.

Why Are SDGs Important?
Fosters Partnerships
• The SDGs foster collaborative
partnerships among varying
stakeholders within the economy
and also internationally.
• Private and publicly controlled
entities are encouraged to come
together and identify legal ways to
finance development within their
country.
• Domestic Resource Mobilization also
plays a part in promoting the
achievement of SDGs and the
importance of domestic
collaboration.

How Can Jamaica Align SDGs With The Country’s
National Development Plan?
Jamaican Policymakers and all local stakeholders who are guided by Jamaica’s
National Development Plan, can incorporate the SDGs within the plan by
categorizing the existing plan under the 17 defined SDGs. This way they can access
what may be lacking from the plan, or already in place to achieve the SDGs.
page 11
How Can Jamaica Align SDGs With The Country’s
National Development Plan?
• By looking at each SDG and matching that goal with those stated by the
National Development Plan, Jamaica can ensure that it is on the right
path.
• Incidentally the plan is also set with a completion time of 2030.
• If it is identified that some of the goals are not being actively addressed,
then amendments can be made to Vision 2030 to incorporate them.
