FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES
A journal is a print or electronic publication that is issued in successive parts (issues) with no predictable end in sight. Each journal issue contains a number of articles. WHAT IS A JOURNAL?
There are four basic types of journals: SCHOLARLY TRADE POPULAR SENSATIONAL WHAT IS A JOURNAL?
SCHOLARLY JOURNALS SCHOLARLY JOURNALS are published by associations or universities, and are written by researchers and experts to inform others of their findings.
SCHOLARLY JOURNALS Author’s affiliation Reviewed by experts in the field Often include charts or graphs Describe the author’s affiliation Contain little or no advertising
SCHOLARLY JOURNALS are also characterized by: abstracts , footnotes , and bibliographies SCHOLARLY JOURNALS
POPULAR JOURNALS are written for a general audience, almost never cite their sources, and are designed to entertain, sell products, or give practical information. POPULAR JOURNALS
TRADE JOURNALS , often published by an association and reviewed by an editor, are written for members of a profession by staff writers and experts on current issues in the field. TRADE JOURNALS
TABLOIDS TABLOIDS or SENSATIONAL MAGAZINES are concerned with grabbing attention, not accuracy. They use flashy headlines and manipulated images to arouse curiosity.
To see a list of print journal titles held in the library, see the red GUIDE TO LIBRARY RESOURCES binders located near the computers. LIST OF JOURNALS
WHAT IS A JOURNAL DATABASE? A journal database is a searchable collection of citations, abstracts, and full-text articles.
To access the databases, go to the CONNELLY LIBRARY HOMEPAGE: library.moore.edu ACCESSING THE DATABASES
From the library homepage, select: ELECTRONIC RESOURCES ACCESSING THE DATABASES
Then scroll down to: PERIODICAL DATABASES ACCESSING THE DATABASES
The right choice will save you lots of time and allows you to target your search . CHOOSING A DATABASE
INTRODUCTION TO JSTOR For this presentation we will focus on the use of JSTOR , a full-text database covering the arts and humanities.
GETTING STARTED First, click on JSTOR under PERIODICAL DATABASES. Once you’re at the JSTOR homepage, click on SEARCH and then BASIC .
BASIC SEARCH is the best way to do a quick search on a topic. You can also choose which disciplines are included in your search, giving you more accurate hits. BASIC SEARCH
SEARCH OPTIONS Use the tabs at the top of the page to switch to a different search option.
Advanced Search allows you to fine-tune your search by choosing where your search terms appear. ADVANCED SEARCH
In advanced search you can also select AND , OR , NOT , or NEAR for each of your search terms. AND narrows your search OR broadens your search NOT excludes words from your search NEAR determines the number of words between two terms ADVANCED SEARCH
You can do even more fine- tuning to find the best results: Publication type Date range Journal title Choose by discipline or by specific journals ADVANCED SEARCH
If you already know which article you’re looking for, use the CITATION LOCATOR . Enter as much as you know about the article, including title, author, and publication. CITATION LOCATOR
Two useful tips while searching for articles: Wildcard : use an asterisk (*) at the end of a word to search for different endings of a word. Example: Art* will give you results such as art, arts, artist, artists, and artisans Phrase : put your keywords in quotation marks to search for those words in the exact same order. Example: “ Francisco Goya” will give you results that include that exact phrase, but not “Francisco de Goya”. SEARCH TIPS
BROWSING JSTOR allows you to browse entire back issues of journals. To do so, select BROWSE on the top navigation bar. Browse by DISCIPLINE , JOURNAL TITLE , or PUBLISHER .
You can search for images in JSTOR as well. Just do a search and click the Images in JSTOR or Images in ARTstor tabs to find images. Images in JSTOR pulls images out of the scanned articles. Images in ARTstor searches the image- only database ARTstor. FINDING IMAGES IN JSTOR
VIEWING ARTICLES Once you click on an article of interest, you’ll be brought to the article’s full text. This page gives you the option of saving the citation, exporting the citation to a program, or opening a PDF of the full article to print.
FINDING RELATED ARTICLES Other than searching, an effective way to locate articles on a topic is to look for related articles . While viewing an article of interest, there are several options for finding similar items through Google Scholar: Related items Items citing this item Items by this author
JSTOR SEARCH VIDEO
Setting up MyJSTOR, your personal JSTOR account: Go to the JSTOR homepage: www.jstor.org Click on Login in the top right corner Click “Register for a MyJSTOR Account” Choose your username and password Use your Moore email address , not a personal email! With a JSTOR account you can save your articles in one place and come back to them later. MyJSTOR
Check the Free Library of Philadelphia Journal Titles binder, or the FLP’s website for their journal holdings. The library is a member of TCLC (Tri-state College Library Cooperative) , allowing you to use over 45 local and area libraries. You can also use the University of the Arts library with your Moore ID and a letter of introduction. Fill out an ILL (Interlibrary Loan) Request Form at the Circulation Desk. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER… If you don’t find what you are looking for, the library staff will be happy to assist you.
