Finding the right resources for
your coursework

This coursework requires use of high-quality
resources. Resources gathered using Google
often do not go into enough detail, are out of
date, or give biased or wrong information.

Library Services provides the high standard of
information required for this assignment. You’ll need
to use the following types of resources
• Textbooks
• Professional or trade bodies and journals
• News items from quality media
• Academic articles about the profession
• Biography or autobiography of leaders in the field
• NOT Wikipedia and similar encylopedia sources

Textbooks – 3 ways
1. Search for books on CityLibrary Search: www.city.ac.uk/library.
*Authors may refer to your business function using different words
than is presented in the assignment, so it’s worth thinking about what
these other words might be.

2. Use the bibliographies in your main textbooks to find authoritative
in-depth resources endorsed by the textbook authors.
This bibliography appears in the chapter on Managing Strategy in
Management by Boddy

3. You can just go into the library and browse the shelves.
Most of these books will have a shelfmark starting with 658
followed by a decimal number specific to the subject.

Use ProQuest Business
Collection to access
trade publications
Find this in CityLibrary
Search by searching
‘ProQuest Business
Collection’
Click here
To quickly navigate to
your chosen function,
go to Classification
codes, and click on
Look up
Classification Codes

Expand management function
Click on the box next to your chosen function
(expanding further as necessary) and click add to
search.
After you’ve added your function:
1. Key into the top search bar search
terms within your function
2. Click on Search.

To get trade professional or trade bodies journals, use the filter in
the left side of the window to select Trade journals (you may have
to click on More options for it to appear). Use other filters such as
date, language and location to find relevant results.

Access
When looking at the results…
If you see or click on it to see the full text of the
article.
If you see click on it to access it on another platform.
Please bear in mind that we may not have it in full text.
You can use the Full text filter to only see items ProQuest has in full text.

News items from Quality
Resources
Most reputable news sources are not free to
access.
Library Services pays for access to thousands of
newspapers, so that you can access quality
resources for your coursework without having to
pay for them yourself.

News items can be found on:
• ProQuest
• Nexis UK
• Factiva
These resources provide general news as
well as Business news. Filter the subject to
Business to view more relevant results.

Biography or autobiography of leaders in the field

business
View it online through CityLibrary Search
In print - shelfmark: 658 BUS
Library Services has various biographies and resources on
different leaders. If you come across somebody you’d like to
learn more about, look them up on CityLibrary Search.

Citing and Referencing
• All resources you use in coursework must be cited and
referenced
• If they aren’t , you could be accused of plagiarism and receive a
failing mark.
• ‘Plagiarism is passing off the ideas or words of someone else as
though they were your own. It applies equally to the work of other
students as to published sources.’
• Avoid plagiarism by citing and referencing all the resources you
use in your work.

Cite them Right shows you exactly how to cite and reference any kind
of resource including book chapters, trade journals, newspaper
articles and encyclopedia entries
