- 11. TIPS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE Direct eye contact is a sign of trust. Greetings are formal, with a firm handshake, direct eye contact, and a smile. Among youngsters informal greetings are more common “hei”, “moi” or “terve”. People in Finland "say what they mean, and mean what they say." Not a small talk -culture. Finns place a great value on speaking plainly and openly. You only kiss your beloved ones. Kisses on the cheek are not commonly used in Finland. One talks, the other listens -culture. First name basis. Finns don’t like to address people with titles and last names. Common distance between speakers is 1-2 meters – give to Finn his/her own space. Finns appreciate punctuality in both business and social situations and arrive on time.
