This document outlines a course on women in literature through the ages. It will examine how gender roles and cultural norms are socialized through stories from childhood through different stages of life. Readings will include folktales, young adult fiction like Blood Red Road, works exploring mother-daughter relationships like The Joy Luck Club, and older women like Tillie Olsen's novella Tell Me a Riddle. Class discussions will analyze how literature represents people at different stages and shapes cultural expectations. Students are assigned to read course materials and Lois Tyson's text on feminist criticism in preparation.
