First steps towards an integration of a Personal Learning Environment at university level

This document outlines steps taken towards developing an integrated Personal Learning Environment (PLE) at the university level. It discusses concepts of a PLE, including that it is a learning center controlled by the student according to their needs and interests. A technological concept is presented using widgets following a mashup principle to combine university services and the open web. An initial design study included usability testing. A PLE was launched at Graz University of Technology in October 2010, which has over 1000 registered users with 30% being highly active. Future work includes integrating learning objects and scenarios along with converters for multiple devices.
