First conditional
6 de noviembre de 2021
Topic: Possible futures. Looking ahead.
General Objective: To talk about causes
and consequences.
Learning goal:students should be able to
talk about cause and consequence
regarding the future of the Earth using
mainly first conditional and vocabulary
related.
Competence: communication
ambientales, desastre natural, causa y consecuencia.
Abstract: This material is for students to practice the use of the
first conditional to talk about present situations with possible future
consequences. This structure is made of two clauses one in
present and the other in future. Regarding conditional in English,
this is quite easy to underdstand because the consequences are
likely to happen. For this structure, the context to be used is
environmental problems which it is a current issue in our society
and it has had more noticeable effects all around the world.
Furthermore, some vocabulary about natural disasters and
environmentl issues is presented as well to support students when
they have to come up with their own examples.
Key words: fist conditonal, possible situation, environmental
problems, natural disaster, cause and consequence
What do you think will be the future
of the Earth?
• Another pandemic?
• More natural
disasters?
• A meteor rock?
• A zombie
apocalypse?
• It’s more likely to face
environmental problems.
These are current problems in our planet
They mainly deal with environmental
problesm due to a climate change.
Loss of glaciers
wildfires
pollution
Environmental problems
erthquake tsunami
Natural disasters
hurricanes
Present cause Future consequence
If people don’t take care of
the environment,
If I recycle more,
If the world gets warmer,
the world will become
uninhabitable
There will be less garbage
Natural disaster will be
more common
First conditional
-Take a look at the following examples:
- These examples show a present condition and a possible
future consequence. These are examples in first
conditional. We use this structure to talk about future
situations that are likely to happen. That is, that we think are
posible.
-
- The structure of the first conditional consists of two parts.
,
If people don’t take care of
the environment,
the world will become
uninhabitable
-You start with if this word
shows condition.
- You need simple present
in the first part
-place a comma after this
first sentence.
In the second part, write the
sentence in future. You can
use will because it is for
predictions based on your
opinion.
- You can also use it the other way around. Just don’t place
a comma in between.
-The world will become uninhabitable If people don’t take
care of the environment.
Now practice by completing these statements:
1. If the world gets warmer, ____________.
2. If governments dont’ find a solution for climate
change, _________
3. Water will be limited if _____________.
4. If more people recycle, _______________.
5. Natural disasters will be common if
_____________.
Think of an answer to this question: What will
happen to the world if we continue burning fossil
fuels? You can use the vocabulary from the first
slides.
Here are some recommendations for you
to take care of the environment.
Conclusion
• When learning grammar, keep in mind the
uses of the structures you are learning so you
can put them into practice. To use the first
conditional remember to refer to a present
condition with a possible future consequence.
Also, reflect on the actions we are doing to
help the environment. Consider that if we
don’t make changes, our world will suffer
terrible consequences.
