INTRODUCTION
Fluidized bed drayer
Fluid bed drying is most widely used
technique for drying. and in pharmaceutical
field mainly for powders and granules.
The direct contact between particles and
air/gas is possible in fluid bed system.
 Here any type of inert gas or air is used.
 They can be designed in either batch or
continuous type fluid bed dryer
 The equipment works on a principle of fluidization.
 In fluidization process, hot air is introduced at high pressure
through a perforated bed of moist solid particulate.
 The wet solids are lifted from the bottom and suspended in a
stream of air (fluidized state).
 To attain this state the requirement is that the velocity of
the air/gas should be grater than the velocity of settling
particles.
 Heat transfer is accomplished by direct contact between the
wet solid and hot gases.
 The vaporized liquid is carried away by the drying gasses..
 The hot gas surrounding every granule to completely dry them.
 Thus, material or granules are uniformly dried.

The dryer is made of stainless steel or plastic.
A detachable bowl is placed at the bottom of the dryer, which is
used for charging and discharging.
The bowl has a perforated bottom with a wire mesh support for
placing materials to be dried.
A fan is mounted in the upper part for circulating hot air.
Fresh air inlet, prefilter and heat exchanger are connected
serially to heat the air to the required temperatures.
The temperature of hot air and exit are monitored.
Bag filters are placed above the drying bowl for recovery of
fines.
 The main principle involved in fluidized bed dryer is
“Fluidization”.
 In this state the granules are completely suspended in a stream
of hot air which is being supplied from the bottom of the
container.

 Fluidization produces full agitation of solid particles and
since each particle gets surrounded by hot air, heat transfer is
extremely high and uniform.
 The product is dried fast without appreciable loss of heat.
Filter bags prevent particles escaping from the dryer.
 The material is left for some time in the dryer for reaching
ambient temperature.
 The end product is free flowing.
In order to improve operation, efficiency, and reproducibility
of a fluidized bed dryer, some parameters need to be
controlled.
Temperature
Humidity
Moisture content of the feed material.
Feed rate/batch size.
Product moisture content.
Particle size and diameter.
 Fluidized bed dryer requires less time to complete drying. i.e.,
20 to 40 min.
Hot spots are not observed in the dryer, because of its excellent
mixing and drying capacities.
The thermal efficiency is 2 to 6 times greater than tray dryer.
 It facilitates the drying of thermolabile substances , since the
contact time for drying is short.
Handling is Easy and Less Labor Intensive
Many organic powders develop electrostatic charges during
drying which can be avoided by efficient electrical earthing of the
dryer.
The turbulence of the fluidized state of granules may cause
attrition of some materials resulting in production of fines which
can be avoided by using suitable binding agent.
high energy consumption.
 Requires gas handling
 Poor fluidization and low flexibility especially if the feed is too
wet.
Drying Sticky Material is Quite Difficult
 It is used for the popularly drying of the granules in the
production of the tablets.
 It is used for the three operation such as mixing, granulation
and drying.
 It is modified for coating of granules.
