FORCE 14 – 1 February 2013

From the Desk of the Reserve FORCE Master Chief:

The Human mind is an amazing thing. It can produce incredible
works such as design with precise detail bridges and buildings, write
novels, discover complex math equations, it has the ability to reason
and form laws which become the basis of our society, it has these fine
abilities and many more. But it also has another side. It has the ability
to trick one’s own self into believing that the best way out of a
desperate and seemingly impossible situation would be to take one’s
own life. It can truly convince itself that committing suicide would be
the best outcome for them and everybody else.

We know from the testimony of those who have been left behind
the facially of such misguided conclusions. Although we cannot go back
in time and undo what has been done, we can and must look to the
future and reach out to all that we can influence and tell them that
suicide is NEVER the answer! That no matter how dark the situation
may seem and how hopeless you may feel, you have someone who
cares, I care and so does many more people around you, you are one of
us and together we can get through any situation! Bottom line, if your
mind tells you that is no way out, tell it to get a second opinion! You
are Never alone.

Sailors out and about:

Congratulations to the 2012 FTS SOY: AWF1(NAC/AW) John A.
Reynolds from COMFLELOGSUPPWING (CFLSW). He will go onto
compete at the Naval Shore SOY competition.

Submarine Force Reserve Component Expeditionary Maintenance (EM)
MM2 Donayre, a member of EM Det N and the New York State Naval
Militia, participated in recovery efforts following the aftermath of
Hurricane Sandy. The NYS Naval Militia is the state’s naval force and by
law, it is made up of at least 95% Navy and Marine Corp Reservist.
MM2 Donayre’s contributions include:
   • Following loss of power, helped to keep diesel generators
operating at Bellevue Hospital. Power Operation was critical in
supporting the evacuation of over 800 patients to other local
hospitals in the subsequent 48 hours.
   • Distributed food and water via trucks to effected areas supplied
       by FEMA.
   • Appointed to take pictures of all events and press conferences, for
use by the Governor’s media office.

29 Jan - NAF Washington will accept the 2012 Regional Community Service
Program Award for the "Campaign Drug Free Flagship Award", Small Shore
FORCE 14 – 1 February 2013
Category. This is largely a result of the highly successful Drug Education
For Youth (DEFY) Program, led by NAFW staff and supported by most of
the Navy tenants, with approximately 45 mentors in total. NAFW has the
second largest DEFY program in the Navy.

Jan-Mar - Two NOSC Charleston, SC Sailors are volunteer basketball
coaches for Joint Base Naval Weapons Station Charleston Youth Sports.

Ongoing - NOSC Springfield, OR Sailors are volunteering two hours weekly
at the Elizabeth Page elementary school as part of the Adopt-a-School
program.
