Fossil Fuels By Steven Apple
What are Fossil Fuels? Fossil fuels are a non-renewable source of energy. Formed from plants and animals that lived up to 300 million years ago, fossil fuels are found in deposits beneath the earth.
What are the different types? There are many different types of fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
How is coal Formed? Coal comes from the massive accumulation of dead land-based plant life, mainly trees.
Different stages of coal formation Coal takes millions of years to develop, and is derived from ancient plant matter that has been subjected to intense heat and pressure that affected physical and chemical alterations. The process through which coal forms from ancient plants is known as coalification.
How coal is used as a fossil fuel Coal is a fossil fuel extracted from the ground by underground mining or open-pit mining
How oil is formed Almost all oil and gas comes from tiny decayed plants, algae, and bacteria.
How oil is used as a fossil fuel Oil is formed from the organic remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
How natural gas formed A gas composed of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Millions of years ago, the remains of plants and animals decayed and built up in thick layers
How natural gas used as a fossil fuel Pressure and heat changed some of this organic material into coal, some into oil and some into natural gas — tiny bubbles of odorless gas.
What are Refineries? An industrial plant for purifying a crude substance, such as petroleum or sugar.
Why are they important to the production of fossil fuels? Its a production facility composed of a group of chemical engineering unit processes and unit operations refining certain materials or converting raw material into products of value.
Exxon Valdez oil spill Occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, a oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, hit Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef and spilled about 10.8 million US gallons of crude oil. It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters ever to occur in history.
Deep Water Horizon Oil Its a massive ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, now considered the largest offshore spill in U.S. history. The spill stems from a sea floor oil gusher that started with an oil well blowout on April 20, 2010. The blowout caused a explosion on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling platform that was southeast of the Louisiana coast in the Macondo Prospect oil field. The explosion killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others.
