2. Introduction
Let’s Revise !
Fractions : Fractions tell about “a part of a whole”.
The General form of a Fraction
Fraction = Numerator
Denominator
Where, denominator ≠ 0
If numerator = denominator then the fraction becomes
a whole i.e. 1. This is called unity of fraction.
3. Types of Fraction
Types of Fraction Meaning
Proper Fraction
When numerator is less than the denominator. It shows the
part of a whole.
Eg: 2/5 , 2/7 , 1/5, 7/11 , 5/12 etc.
Improper
Fraction
When numerator is greater than the denominator. It
represents the mixture of whole and a proper fraction.
Eg: 6/4, 9/5, 11/3 , 23/6 etc.
Mixed Fraction
The improper fraction can be written in the mixed form as
it is the mixture of whole number and a fraction.
4. Types of Fraction
Types of Fraction Meaning
Like Fraction The fractions with the same denominator are like fractions.
Unlike Fraction
The fractions with different denominators are unlike
fractions.
Equivalent
Fraction
The fractions proportional to each other are called
equivalent fractions. It represents the same amount with
different fractions.
5. Multiplication of a Fraction
BY A WHOLE NUMBER
To multiply a whole number with a proper or an improper
fraction, we multiply the whole number with the numerator
of the fraction, keeping the denominator same. For example:
6. Multiplication of a Fraction
BY A WHOLE NUMBER
To multiply a mixed fraction to a whole number, first
convert the mixed fraction to an improper fraction and then
multiply. For example,
7. Fraction as an operator ‘of’
If it is written that find the ½ of 24 then what does ‘of’ mean ?
Here, ‘of’ means multiplication.
Find:
8. Multiplication of a Fraction by
Fraction
Fractions are multiplied as:
For example,
9. Value of products of the fraction
When we multiply two natural numbers then we get the
result which is greater than the numbers.
Eg: 5x6 = 30 where , 30 > 5 also 30 > 6
But What about value of product of fractions ?
10. Value of products of the fraction
When we multiply two natural numbers then we get the
result which is greater than the numbers.
Eg: 5x6 = 30 where , 30 > 5 also 30 > 6
But What about value of product of fractions ?
11. Value of products of the fraction
A. Product of two proper fractions:
If we multiply two proper fractions then their product
will be less than the given fractions.
12. Value of products of the fraction
B. Product of two improper fractions:
If we multiply two improper fractions then their
product will be greater than the given fractions.
13. Value of products of the fraction
C. Product of one improper and one proper
fraction:
If we multiply one improper fraction and one proper
fraction then their product will be greater than the
proper fraction and less than the improper fraction.
14. Division of fractions
A. Divide whole number by fraction –
If we have to divide whole number with proper or
improper (mixed fraction) then we multiply that whole
number with the reciprocal of the given fraction.
Mixed fraction is converted to improper fraction.
15. Division of fractions
B. Divide fraction by whole number –
To divide the fraction with the whole number , we have to
take the reciprocal of the whole number and multiply
with the given fraction.
Example:
16. Division of fractions
C. Divide fraction with fraction –
To divide a fraction with another fraction, we have to
multiply the first fraction with the reciprocal of the second
fraction.
17. Decimal Fractions
Fraction which has
denominator 10, 100, 1000
etc. are called Decimal
Fractions.
A decimal number is a
number with a decimal
point. Numbers left to the
decimal are 10 greater and
numbers to the right of the
decimal are 10 smaller.
18. Multiplication of Decimal Numbers
1. Multiply a decimal number with a whole number
Multiply whole number and decimal number as
normal numbers but decimal place will
remain the same as it was in the original number.
Example :
35 x 3.45 = 120.75
19. Multiplication of Decimal Numbers
2. Multiply a decimal number by 10, 100, 1000
Multiply a decimal number by 10 then we transfer the
decimal point to the right by one place.
Example : 3.45 x 10 = 34.5
Multiply a decimal number by 100 then we transfer the
decimal point to the right by two place.
Example : 3.45 x 100 = 345
Multiply a decimal number by 1000 then we transfer the
decimal point to the right by three place.
Example : 3.45 x 1000 = 3450
20. Multiplication of Decimal Numbers
3. Multiply decimal number by decimal number
Multiply whole number and decimal number as normal
numbers and decimal place in the product is equal to the
sum of the decimal places in the given decimal numbers.
Example:
21. Division of Decimal Numbers
1. Divide decimal number by whole number
Divide whole number and decimal number as
normal numbers but decimal place will remain
the same as it was in the original number.
Example: 12.96 ÷ 4 = 3.24
22. Division of Decimal Numbers
2. Divide a decimal number by 10, 100, 1000
Divide a decimal number by 10 then we transfer
the decimal point to the left by one place.
Example : 34.5 ÷ 10 = 3.45
Divide a decimal number by 100 then we transfer
the decimal point to the left by two place.
Example : 34.5 ÷ 100 = 0.345
Divide a decimal number by 1000 then we transfer
the decimal point to the left by three place.
Example : 34.5 ÷ 1000 = 0.0345
23. Division of Decimal Numbers
3. Divide decimal number by decimal number
Step1 : Convert denominator as a whole number
by multiplying both numerator and denominator by
10, 100 etc.
Step 2 : Now divide them as done before.
Example:
