HANDOUT: Frequency Distribution Table
Frequency Distribution – It is a collection of observations produced by sorting them into classes and
showing their frequency (or numbers) of occurrences in each class
A. Ungrouped Frequency Distribution – It results when observations are sorted into

Steps in Constructing a Grouped Frequency Distribution Table:

Important Terms:
Range – the difference between the highest and lowest score in a set of data.
Frequency – the number of observations belonging to a class interval.
Class Intervals or Class Limits – refers to a grouping defined by a lower limit and an upper
limit. The lower limit of a class is the smallest data value that can be included in the class, and the
upper limit is the largest data value that can be included in the class.
For example:
In the class 19 – 21: lower limit = ________ upper limit = ________
In the class 45 – 47: lower limit = ________ upper limit = ________
Class Boundaries – These are often described as the true limits because these are more
precise expressions of class limits. The lower boundary of a class is 0.5 less than its lower limit,
and the upper boundary is 0.5 more than its upper limit.
For example:
In the class 19 – 21: lower boundary = ________ upper boundary = ________
In the class 45 – 47: lower boundary = ________ upper boundary = ________
Class Mark – It is the midpoint or the middle value in a class. It is obtained by finding the
average of the lower limit and the upper limit.
Class Size or Class Width – refers to the difference between the upper class boundary and the
lower class boundary of a class interval.
Cumulative Frequency – shows how many scores fall below or above a certain level
