Activity #1: Is it AI or Not AI?
• 15 minutes
• Can you tell which of the following are AI and which are
not? Choose yes, no, or “kind of” (it means that it both can
be and can't be, depending on the viewpoint).
Activity #1: Is it AI or Not AI?
Facebook uses technology to recognize faces and
notify you whenever the site’s technology sees an
image of you uploaded, whether it’s tagged or not.
Is this AI or not?

Yes. Facebook uses facial
recognition algorithms (DeepFace)
to automatically detect any visual
images that resemble you. It is
trained on four million images
uploaded by Facebook users.
However, as of November 2021,
due to growing privacy concern,
Facebook discontinued this feature.

users’ viewing behavior and history.

Activity #1: Is it AI or Not AI?
Netflix suggests movies and shows based on
users’ viewing behavior and history.
Is this AI or not?
Netflix's machine-learning-based recommender
system learns from its users. Every time you
spend time watching a movie, it collects data that
informs the algorithm behind the scenes and
refreshes it. The more you watch, the more up-to-
date and accurate the algorithm is (in my opinion,
it is still far less than perfect!).

3.
Yes & Maybe. The older
Roombas only have sensors to
detect obstacles such as walls
and stairs without using AI. The
current version (called iRobot
Genius Home Intelligence) uses
AI to make decisions on what is
the most efficient route.

Activity #1: Is it AI or Not AI?
Industry robots used in warehouses to store and
retrieve goods on demand along various product
aisles.
Is this AI or not?
No. industry robots interact with the warehouse
via sensors and actuators. They are programmed
by humans and are used to carry out a repetitive
and specific series of movements. However,
things are evolving rapidly in this space, and there
are AI-powered robots for more complex tasks
that adapt to the environment as they learn.

Activity #1: Is it AI or Not AI?
Currently, Google’s new (rebranded)
division called Robotics at Google is
doing some groundbreaking work by
incorporating machine learning
algorithms in robots so they can learn
on their own and can manipulate
objects in more subtle ways.

Activity #2: Your Experience with AI
• 10 minutes
• Discuss: Have you used an AI tool in your professional
life? What are the tools?
• Share: one tool you found particularly
interesting/useful.
• Summarize: Facilitator will jot down notes
Why Use AI?
Support Learners
Support
Institutions
Support Faculty
• AI can automate process,
make analysis and prediction
• AI tutors and tools to provide
personalized, instant, and
dynamic content and
feedback
• As study, writing, and
research aid
• Support study skills and time
management
• AI can assist faculty with
administrative tasks,
enhancing research
capabilities, and refining
teaching strategies
Administrative Tasks
AI can be used for:
Brainstorming ideas:
• E.g. Generate a list
of activities ideas,
come up with
scenarios and
examples, give
different titles to
an exercise.
Course work preparation:
• E.g. Generate Flashcards
or Q&A questions based
on an article; Generate
quiz questions, answers,
and feedback.
Automating or streamlining
repetitive, mundane, and time-
consuming tasks:
• E.g. Create study schedules
based on syllabus, write
emails, explain or summarize
a concept and list the main
points.
Activity #3.1: AI Admin Tools
• 30 minutes
• Demo: ChatGPT/GPT4 - https://chat.openai.com/
• Tryout: Access ChatGPT and interact using your
teaching material/content
Coffee Break
Research
AI can be used for:
Image & Graph
Generation
Lit Review
Ideas
generation

Teaching and Learning
AI can be used for:
Content creation:
• E.g. create
learning
activities such
as flash cards
based on text,
convert text
to other
media
Discussion/providing
feedback:
• E.g. Provide
adaptive and
personalize
feedback, to
suggest
discussion topics
and track
responses
Collaboration:
• E.g. Allow
students to
collaborate
on projects
and learning
together
Content interaction:
• E.g. Allow
students to ask
questions while
watching a
video, reading a
PDF, etc.
Activity #3.3: AI Teaching Tools
• 30 minutes
• Demo: Transvribe - https://www.transvribe.com/
Mention Perusall if time allows.
• Tryout: Access Transvribe and try out the tool
Challenges and Limitations
While some learners may have the
financial resources to access
advanced AI technologies, others
may be left at a disadvantage.
Unequal Access
The rapid advancement of AI tools
has outpaced the development of
comprehensive regulations and
policies.
Lack of Regulation and Policy
AI tools are only as good as the
data sources they are trained on.
But it is not always possible to
control, review, and edit data
sources.
Reliance on Data Sources
The development and maintenance
of AI tools often involve significant
manual labor.
Labor-intensive Nature of AI
Some jurisdictions impose
restrictions or bans on certain AI
technologies, limiting their
potential benefits for learners.
Geographical Disparity
Effectively utilizing AI tools in
education demands a new set of
skills and AI literacy from educators
and learners alike.
Different Skillsets and AI Literacy
Activity #4: Challenges and
Limitations Case Study Analysis
• 15 minutes
• Break into groups of 3-4 people
• Discuss and Identify potential pitfalls, ethical concerns,
or other issues in the case study
• Report back
Developing AI Literacy
The 7 key focus areas for AI Literacy:
Build a solid
foundation of
what AI is, the
history of AI, the
current AI
landscape and
some common
techniques.
We need to
explore real-
world
applications of
AI across
various fields
to gain a
broader view.
We need to
develop critical
thinking skills to
flag issues such
as hallucinations,
bias and mis-
information.
We need to
develop abilities
to understand,
interpret, and
work with data.
Discussions
about AI
should always
include the
ethical
aspects.
We need to
address the role
of AI in
education.
We need to
understand the
impact of AI on
the future of
work and the
changing job
roles.

Activity #5: Brainstorming Ideas
• 10 minutes
• Brainstorm and Share: What are some ways to foster AI
literacy among staff and students?
• Summarizes facilitator to summarize ideas
“Artificial Intelligence is
not a substitute for human
intelligence; it is a tool to
amplify human creativity
and ingenuity.”
— Fei-Fei Li, Co-Founder, AI4ALL
