What is Symbolism? 
“ the word symbolism is derived 
from the Greek word “symbollein” 
which means to throw together, 
Mark, Emblem token or sign. The 
ward symbol s an object which can 
be animated or inanimate . 
Symbol represent or stand for 
something different.
According to M.H Abraham 
“ In the usage of literary 
Historian, symbolist movement 
designates specifically a group of 
French writers beginning with 
Charles Baudelaire”
Stopping by woods 
“whose woods these are I think I know” 
 Whose – shows the possessiveness of the human life. 
“ and miles to go before I sleep” 
 For the last “miles to go” now seems like life; the last 
“sleep” now seems like death.
Woods, positive or negative ? 
 Woods – wilderness, madness, the pre- rational, the looming 
irrational.(negative) 
 Woods –seeds of the irrational, night , with all the varied 
connotation of darkness. 
 Irrational – Attraction, restful ,seductive, lovely, dark and deep
design 
 Cobweb of spider – fat and white 
 Comparisons between white and evil 
thing.
Fire and ice 
 Juxtaposition 
 Binary opposition 
 Fire – Patience, 
creativity, new life 
 Ice – destroy, death
The gift outright 
 Natural relationship between land and human 
being 
 About the war 
 Spiritual and moral death of America 
 American colonization.
