This document discusses sensory processing disorder (SPD), including its definition, causes, diagnosis, and treatment. SPD is a neurological disorder where sensory information is misinterpreted by the brain. It was first identified by Dr. Jean Ayres over 50 years ago, but is still not officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. SPD is diagnosed through questionnaires about a child's senses and behaviors, followed by an occupational therapy evaluation. Treatment involves a customized sensory diet and therapy to help each child learn to manage their senses. While there is no cure currently, further research and recognition of SPD is hoped to help improve understanding and support for those affected.
