Davis and Moore argued that inequality is necessary for society to function properly. They believed that different roles in society require different levels of skills and talents, and that these roles should be rewarded differently. According to their theory of functionalism, society relies on specialists filling key roles like managers, lawyers, and doctors, and these roles require more education and training and should therefore be compensated more than roles like secretaries, cleaners, and manual laborers.
