GOALS Get to know your classmates Become more prepared and confident as a Teaching Fellow (TF) Think about what unique role a TF plays in the department and for undergraduates Familiarize with fundamental teaching skills, strategies, and language Gain useful insights and tips for teaching students Know where to go for more help or training in teaching
- 7. INTRODUCING MICROTEACHING For Session III, you will prepare a 10 minute presentation for a group of 3-4 peers. Topics have been assigned randomly, but reflect your likely teaching assignment. Refer to your packet to see your topic assignment and then find your microteaching topic prompt in the following pages.
- 8. TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS Teaching assignments for the fall semester are currently being finalized; however, they will most likely be as follows: Organic Lab • Organic • Chem Bio Gen Chem Lab • Inorganic • Physical • Theoretical • Biophysical
- 9. PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB Basic logistics Meet once per week with each of two different sections 12 undergraduate students per section May do prelab lecture Lab manual Grade lab reports Proctor final practical exam during week before finals

PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB On a typical lab day: Sit in on pre-lab lecture Proctor and collect pre-lab quiz Welcome students into lab, make announcements, introduction, tell them where reagents/equipment is, mention any safety or waste management protocol Answer student questions, help troubleshoot, make sure everyone is following safety protocol At end of the lab, collect datasheets During week, grade last week’s lab reports (2-5 pages each, usually 2-3 hour task if TF-ing two lab sections)

PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF GENERAL CHEMISTRY DISCUSSION SECTION Basic logistics Meet once per week with each of two different sections About 15 undergraduate students each Review last week’s lecture in whatever format you please Proctor and grade 3-4 exams per semester Grading will take typically 6 hours Hold one office hour per week

On a typical lecture day: Sit in on lecture Walk around to help students think through “clicker questions” during lecture PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF GENERAL CHEMISTRY DISCUSSION SECTION During a typical discussion section: Hold one 50-min discussion section per week per section (most people have two sections) Go over a couple of problem- solving questions provided by instructor Rest of discussion section is yours to structure as you wish

PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB Basic logistics Meet 2 times a week, different “sections” About 12 undergraduate students each Course packet 1 page short pre-lab “Experimental Plan” notes (tickets to class) handed in every class Three post-lab assignments that take the place of formal lab reports. 1 examination (final) at the end (30% of the final grade)

PREVIEW OF ROLE AS A TF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LAB On a typical lab day: Roster Mini-lecture on the agenda, introduction, theory/mechanism, techniques, and useful hints for the lab Extraction, Reflux, Purification methods, Melting point, IR, NMR Supervise, answer questions and assist by walking around Sign lab book pages before a student exits
