3. Land degradation assessment and carbon sequestration
monitoring for sustainable soil management in agriculture and
climate change mitigation
Objectives:
To assess land degradation by using a land
degradation neutrality (LDN) concept
To monitor soil carbon and mechanisms in
changing soil carbon in agricultural land
To identify sustainable soil management under
different soil practices using SSM protocol
1
2
3
Land degradation will remain an important global issue for the 21st century because of its adverse
impact on agronomic productivity, the environment, and its effect on food security and the quality of life
6th Asian Soil Partnership MEETING | 4-5 February 2021
•Select study areas
•LDN for assessing
land degradation
•Identify experts,
relevant agencies
and stakeholders and
organize workshop
•Data collection
•Organize workshop
to identify
appropriate SSM
•Etc.
1. Assessment of
land degradation
using land
degradation
neutrality (LDN)
•Monitoring of soil
carbon and crop
production (long-term
and database
compilation)
•Estimating the
potential of soil
carbon sequestration
•Mechanisms of
changing soil carbon
•Networking regional
research
•Etc.
•Plan the SSM
assessment
•Select study areas
and control areas
