IDEATION
The initial idea was to create a whole new I.P and with Naughty dogs previous
record was sequels and trilogy’s. The characters that they created in the game came
with a fresh start. The Director of the game said he watched a Planet Earth BBC
program on a particular infection that is called cordyceps fungus which consumes its
host and controls its brain. This idea was then implemented to humans as a theory,
the creators of the game originally never had an infected as an enemy but just an
almost empty earth that has nearly all humans instinct.
PRE – PRODUCTION
This is the stage of the game where concept art and key themes play a big role as
the developers collaborate. Neil Druckmann co director of the game was reading the
book during pre-production called ‘the world without us’, in this book was a depiction
of what the world would look like without the human race. The book describes in
great detail of what Mother Nature does to the world when it is being untouched.
Druckmann used this as basis for the concept art for the game and worked hard to
create a visual aspect for The Last of Us. Naughty Dog where also hard at work on
creating the characters for the game, this includes not just design or creation but
also casting the actors as the game was to feature motion capture. A script also is
being developed at this time and usually gets changed throughout.
PRODUCTION
This Is the next stage of development once all concept art/visual art are done as well
as casting and most of the script. All the concept art for everything starts to be
implemented into the 3D world as well as all the key animator’s start the basics. The
actors start to perform on camera and on motion capture suits. Also the Music starts
to be created by the artist, who works very closely with Neil Druckmann on the feel
and tone of the game.
POST-PRODUCTION
Here (like a movie) is when the game is being put together; the cut scenes become
more detailed. Fixes on bugs in the game and tweaks are also being added, as well
as game testers start to play the game. The user interface goes through different
stages to be less frustrating one and to be fair. While all this is being done the game
has enough footage for Trailers and adverts as well as demos for big gaming events
like E3. Also Naughty Dog go hard art work for posters and a box art.
POST-MORTUM
Here is the final stage of the pipeline; Naughty Dog goes over their production of the
game, evaluate their work and go over what went well. They also wait for reviews
and sales to know how successful the game was. In addition to this they also made a
1hour and a half documentary about the making of the game.
