What is Game Design ?

What is Game Play?

!

!

Game design is the game development process of development and designing

!

the contents and rules and design of gameplay, environment, storyline and

!

characters.!

!

!

!

The designer of a game is very much like the director of a film; the designer is

!

the visionary of the game and controls the artistic and technical elements of the

!

game in fulfillment of their vision.!
!

!
!
Gameplay is a feature that need to function in order to ensure game is FUN.!

Gameplay mechanics is a rule and feature that influence !how the game is

What is Game Play?

Gameplay systems revolve around
characters, cameras, movement, controls,
weapons, equipment, objects, enemies, magic,
inventory and other elements that must have in
order to create and sustain the “fun factor”.!
!

Game mechanics is more engineering
concept, while game play is more of a design
concept. To really understand the world of
gameplay mechanics, it is important to look
how it has evolved.!

Why? What is it about these games that keep people entertained day in and day
out, year after year?!
!
Most of classic games revolve around the strategy and complex set of
interactions that flow by simple rules, simple abilities and then allows players to
combine them to achieve many different abilities. !

Console/Video game gameplay evolution

1st & 2nd Generations

!
Early video game systems were primitive by today standards but still contained
some classic game that will probably stay with us some form forever. Most first
and second generation games had just a few gameplay mechanic, relying on a
lot repetition, pattern memorization and timing skill to play. Etc pac-man and
donkey kong. !
!
For Atari 2600, Game designed with very simple to control. Most games allowed
basic movement and shooting. !
!
!

3rd Generations (8-bit)

Super mario bros was the first game to feature smooth scrolling levels, which
made it landmark in the video game industry.!
!
The game introduced a wide variety of gameplay mechanics, and began to allow
players to combine in interesting ways. Players had to think about how to kill
rather than just pushing button or gun.!

The game had 24 levels, its also introduce bosses, secrets, coin collection,

storage capasities, improved controlled button

RPG (roleplaying game). Players take
responsibility for acting out these roles within a
narrative. !

5th Generations (32-bit)

The fifth-generation era (also known as the
32-bit era, the 64-bit era or the 3D era) refers
to the computer and video games, video game
consoles, and video game handhelds from
approximately 1993 to 2001[1] and was
dominated by three consoles, the Sega Saturn
(1994), PlayStation (1994), Nintendo 64 (1996)!

6th Generations

In this era less critical to come up with the
next killer gameplay mechanic than to intgrate
smoothly into the game experience. Many
focused on more stylistic, thematic or
cinematic experience. !

the turn of the 21st century which was 1998 o

Defining the process

!
A design process is a series of steps that must be completed to refine a n idea to
game and bring to completion. Every feature of the game must be considered,
refined, questioned, verified and solidified before it can be implemented. !
!
As designer, you control the content that goes into a project and determine the
gameplay, moves, character, special effect, levels and much more.!

Establish the core theme for game
by asking yourself a series of
question such as these.

Interface design
Introduction

!
The main purpose of game interface is to allow players to communicate with

games.!

What is the essence of the game?!

!

Who is the player?!

Interface is responsible for feedback – conveying to the player what is

What does the player do?!

happening in the game.!

How does the player do it?!

!

Where does the player do it?!

What obstacle you facing ?!

What does the player do it?!

What is you score?!

Who does the player do it with?!

How many live do you have left?!

What are the games' stand-out

How much longer to achieve my goal or to winning?!

features?!

!

Interface design

have difficulties using interface. !

The development team
Game design pipeline, responsibilities of entire team.

Game Design Documentation (GDD)

!
Art director – oversees aesthetics. The bring all the art styles together to
maintain a consistent look.!
Writers – Write backstory and dialogue.!

Games design documentation are created by assembling all the ideas for
your game plan into organized, written form. Some development teams use
documentation and stress the need for it.

Concepts artists – come up with visual style, through drawing, painting, sculpture
and they communicate their ideas to the rest of the team.!
Game designers – plan Gameplay, the write the design document that everyone
will reference throughout the development process.!
Level designers – Design the levels in a game where player will interact.!
Environmental artist – Create art assets from the game world.!
Character artist- creates character art for the game world.!
Animator – Bring character to life by giving them motion.!
Technology Programmer –Creates the engine and makes tool to ease your life.!
Sound designers- Create sound effects and drive the mood of the levels.!
