Gateways and Tematic Portals Centered in an especific subject Activity and uses are oriented to a user community Offering: Own information Referenced information User services are developed around the information content
Information Organization A collection is organized Collection is focused with criteria that the users can understand Adopts the “bibliography metaphor” The first approach is hierarchical The user has the “search” and “browse” options to access to the collection content
Gateway as digital information space A gateway is a digital information space It’s a complex context, where interact information management, information design, human-computer interaction, cognitive psycology... User behavior Tends to desintermediation User has a clear objective, with proper definition and classification Must learn the gateway criteria for organization, classification, exploration and retrieval Must adequate its cognitive scheme to the cognitive scheme subyacent to the gateway applied classification
User problems Heterogeneus interfaces Different classifications, in the same subject areas Dificulties to combine classifications with descriptors/keywords Different performances of the gateways search systems Different levels of description and evaluation of referred resources
Gateways and classifications DDC RENARDUS Thesaurus Biz/Ed Own classification GESIS-SocioGuide Nederlandse Basisclassificatie DUTCHESS DEWEY BUBL LCC, LCSH INFOMINE By subject editors DMOZ LCSH LII UDC, HASSET, IBBS, CareData SOSIG
