GCSE/Enrichment structure at
Canons
Year 7 and 8
• In the lower school (Years 7 and 8) all students follow the national
Curriculum, which includes the core subjects of English, Mathematics
and Science alongside the foundation curriculum subjects of Art,
Drama, Music, Geography, History, Religious Studies, PSHRE, ICT,
Physical Education, French, Italian or Spanish and Design &
Technology.
• This also helps students to decide what they would like to study in
years 9, 10 and 11.
Year 9, 10 and 11
• Students at Canons begin their GCSE and BTEC and enrichment courses at
the beginning of Year 9.
• GCSE English, Maths and Science courses last three years and students take
the exams for these subjects at the end of Year 11.
• In addition to these core subjects, students will choose two other subjects.
There are a wide range of GCSE, BTEC and enrichment courses that the
students can choose from.
• If they take a GCSE or BTEC the students will gain the final qualification in
examined subjects at the end of one year, having studied the courses
intensively.
• A range of enrichment courses, designed to enhance and complement the
examined subjects, are available and many students will choose to take at
least one enrichment course during KS4.

- The option of enrichments reduces the stress of
GCSE exams, especially in year 11
What would we change?
• Lessons or after school clubs teaching adult life and financing
• Offer other subjects including:
• German
• Arabic
• Politics
• Citizenship.
• Changes to the timetable such as:
