Genetics is the study of inherited traits and heredity, the passing of traits from parents to offspring. Mendel conducted experiments with pea plants to understand heredity. He found that traits are controlled by discrete factors, now known as genes, and traits segregate and assort independently during reproduction according to the laws of inheritance he discovered. Specifically, dominant traits mask recessive traits in the first filial generation but recessive traits reappear in the second filial generation according to a 3:1 ratio, demonstrating that alleles separate and assort independently during gamete formation.
