This document discusses two proposed mechanisms (biogenic magnetite and cryptochrome) that some animals and humans use to sense the Earth's geomagnetic field. It then summarizes an experiment that tested whether human sleep patterns correlate with geomagnetic activity levels. The experiment found a weak positive correlation between reported sleep disturbances in 30 individuals and daily geomagnetic fluctuations over 30 days. The conclusion calls for further research with more rigorous testing methods and controls to better understand potential human magnetoreception.
