This document outlines an introductory course on Classical Greece. The first session focuses on the origins of Greece, including the culture of Mycenaean Greece as described by Homer and the archaeological findings from this period. Key questions addressed are why study ancient Greece, what is the primary source of knowledge about prehistoric Greece, what was Mycenaean culture like, and how reliable is Homer as a historical source. The session also previews major topics to be covered in subsequent classes, such as the rise of city-states, Greek colonization, Sparta and Athens, the Persian Wars, the Golden Age, and Hellenism.
