Global warming is caused by increased greenhouse gases from human use of fossil fuels and deforestation, trapping heat in the atmosphere. This is causing polar ice caps and glaciers to melt, raising sea levels and threatening wildlife. Other effects include more frequent and intense hurricanes, droughts, wildfires, and spread of diseases as climates change. To address global warming, alternatives to fossil fuels like solar, wind and water power must be adopted, and individual actions taken to reduce carbon footprints.

- 2. What is “Global Warming”? Global Warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change. What caused this?

While many greenhouse gases occur naturally and are needed to create the greenhouse effect that keeps the Earth warm enough to support life, human use of fossil fuels is the main source of greenhouse gasses. By driving cars, using electricity from coal-fired power plants, or heating our homes with oil or natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. Deforestation is another significant source of greenhouse gases, because fewer trees means less carbon dioxide conversion to oxygen. Quit

Greenhouse gasses Greenhouse gases are gaseous constituents of the atmosphere, both natural and anthropogenic, that absorb and emit radiation at specific wavelengths within the spectrum of thermal infrared radiation emitted by the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere itself, and by clouds. - 8. Polar ice caps melting First , it will raise sea levels. There are 5,773,000 cubic miles of water in ice caps, glaciers, and permanent snow. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all glaciers melted today the seas would rise about 230 feet. Luckily, that’s not going to happen all in one go! But sea levels will rise. Second , melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean, or in plain English make it less salty. The stream shutdown or irregularity would cool the area around north-east America and Western Europe. Luckily, that will slow some of the other effects of global warming in that area! Third , temperature rises and changing landscapes in the artic circle will endanger several species of animals. Only the most adaptable will survive. Fourth , global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight, much of which is reflected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector is the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth. Quit
- 9. Economic consequences Most of the effects of anthropogenic global warming won’t be good. And these effects spell one thing for the countries of the world: economic consequences. Hurricanes cause do billions of dollars in damage, diseases cost money to treat and control and conflicts exacerbate all of these.

Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves Although some areas of Earth will become wetter due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves Africa will receive the worst of it, with more severe droughts also expected in Europe. Water is already a dangerously rare commodity in Africa, and according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming will exacerbate the conditions and could lead to conflicts and war.

- 24. Insects and Disease Mosquitoes are a main concern for humans in our new world of global warming. These insects carry diseases such as malaria, and West Nile that can be fatal to humans. With hotter and longer summers more mosquitoes are breeding, and attacking people. There are many other disease such as Lymes disease, that are happening in greater numbers due to the longer breeding season. Not only are their more insects in the world, but they are traveling into areas that previously could not. This is due to the warmer weather allowing these insects to occupy regions that were once to cold for them.
