Social skills and
competences
While learning to talk and approach the customer in the right way at the Ticket Office, I was
forced to learn better communication and social skills. By answering hundreds ofcustomer
service calls over the pastcouple ofyears Ihave not only improved my customer service
skills, butalso, my vocabulary and communication skills. Having daily interactions that consist
of upsetcustomers helped me to develop strategies to deal with all kinds ofpeople and all
kinds ofsituations. As a result, I developed skills in conflictmanagement, active listening,
effective communication, and problem solving.
Organisational skills
and competences
A few organizational skills Ilearned in my few years ofprofessional experience include the
ability to plan and schedule my time. Having a job and being a studentcan come into conflict,
however, the bestway I’ve learned to handle this situation is to plan my time better in hopes
there is more free time, which I may use for schoolwork. This time management competency
is important to my daily life in college and as Icontinue into my career. Time management has
been the mostcritical organisational skill I have developed thus far, and is something that will
help me with many aspects oflife throughout my career.
Technical skills and
competences
Throughout my time at the Leeds Business School Ihave worked in many different groups on
many different projects. The one that comes to my mind is a 90-page business proposal for
Operations and Information Management in which three of us business students created an
operations plan based on real-time reality and prices. Throughoutthis projectand many
others I have managed to sharpen my projectmanagementskills through trial and error. By
learning to work with others in various group sizes and finding where typical mistakes happen,
I will be able to better foresee mistakes and can preventor be aware ofcommon issues.
Computer skills and
competences
Through my scholastic work I have developed the essential skills to operate Microsoft Excel
and MicrosoftOffice. Some ofthe key projects that helped develop these skills include
Operations and Information Management90 page business proposal and a few excel projects
in statistics. Outside ofschool, Ispend some ofmy free time learning how to computer
program. The various coding languages that I’ve self-taught myselfinclude HTML and CSS.
More recently Ihave started looking atlearning Ruby and am soon to start the Ruby on Rails
tutorial. Ruby on Rail is my current projectin progress and something Ihope to complete in
the nextsemester. My scholastic work has provided me with the essential and basic skills to
understand computers and how to use them, however, I feel it is a matter oftime before
everyone needs to know web development for their own personal security and hence, coding
has become a hobby ofmine.
Artistic skills and
competences
In my childhood Iindulged in playing every sportpossible. As a result, my artistic skills tend to
be an area that needs improvement. However, throughoutthe years I have grown to learn to
like several aspects including music and photography. Like many, my photography skills have
been developed and sharpened through the modern day use ofsocial media. Instagram, a
picture-posting app, has become the centre ofphotography and Ihave learned how to use the
various effects and photo strategies through this app and ones similar to this. One positive
consequence ofgetting into photography is that you have to be more active and find new cool
things to take pictures of. Music, on the other hand, is and has been something that I tend to
be attracted to even since a kid. Itdidn’tmatter if it was Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Aaron
Carter, The Eagles, classical jazz, or so on,music found a place in my heart before Ieven
started to find what music I liked, as my parents music was the beginning ofmy own musical
taste. Although my taste has and will change, Ilike to find meaning and understanding in
music in almostall genres ofmusic.
Other skills and
competences
As a young child Istruggled with school and other aspects oflife. Some ofthe obstacles in my
life that I have already overcome include difficultly learning to reading, depression, anxiety,
divorced parents, and hypoglycaemia. Because ofmy unique background with dealing with
these diverse conditions Ifeel confidentin my ability not only to take care ofand understand
myselfbutalso my ability to understand others’ intercultural competencies. Managing and
understanding yourselfis they key to trying to understand others. One positive aspectthat I
can take away from my background is that it has made me into a lifelong learner. One lesson
you quickly find outin life is that change is a constant and you always need to be adapting to
the change. This competency ofchange and constantlearning is essential to a global mindset
as this change and adaptation is necessary to continue learning and be a lifelong learner.
