Building Professional Relationships in Halifax
And Beyond...
Denise DeLong, Project Manager

ALL NETWORKING is AWKWARD
Networking is like vegetables
You know they are good for you but
you still don’t eat them
WHY?
Rapport/Relationship Building &
The Slow Burn
People do business with those that they like
and trust
Professional friendships are the core of
any successful career or uncovering career
opportunities. More great careers are
launched through friendships and professional
referrals than great resumes.
And ALL the Surveys say…….
o Surest way to find a job
o #1 Search strategy
o HR loves it
o 65% to 85% success
o Unadvertised jobs

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Make it part of your life Expand your network and deepen relationships Advance your career, move into a new field, learn for life Find a mentor, meet a role model, receive encouragement and emotional support, evaluate job offers, assess your transferable skills, get expert advice, What car to buy Where to send children to school, companies Extrovert vs. introvert
  • #5: IN fact for some people.. They don’t even use the word NETWORK because it is about relationship buildiing.
  • #6: NETWORKING is ALL Of these things
  • #7: Quick debrief of the points he makes that they liked! Good on ETIQUETTE of networking. Follow up.. Follow through etc.
  • #8: HAND OUT
  • #10: OF course, these are grim statistics BUT, they remind you that you are not meeting people on you computer at home, you have to “PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE” with a PLAN
  • #11: Extrovert vs. introvert - introverts may be more successfully initially taking advantage of structured opportunities
  • #12: I’m sure most of you are already doing this.. One thing.. If you are coming into a conversation with 2 or 3 people, notice if they DON”T talk about work, look for clues ;)
  • #13: Part of daily life.. This IS what we do in Halifax.
  • #15: The first and best networking contacts are your friends.  Don’t ask a friend to help you find a job ask them to introduce you to someone they know.
  • #16: PC Comfortable Networking Monster
  • #17: Objectives are within the next year GOALS are more long term
  • #19: Sometimes these are NOT the same thing, sometimes, the first layer is what do you do, the second is more interesting ( see next slide)
  • #21: I asked them if they thought that they might cut anything. Some picked up on the “ I am a positive, proactive…because.. Maybe you don’t need to say it, maybe through your listening and interaction it will be evident
  • #23: You may start with one or 2 from the left but hopefully through the discussion you will get to talk about what’s on the right. What are the questions YOU could ask someone else so they could talk about their interests?
  • #24: Respect reader’s time
  • #26: Quick debrief of where they saw the errors
  • #30: Tempting to talk about the negative, the struggle but don’t dwell on it.
  • #31: ACTIVITY: Get everyone stand-- two circles.. Those who have had jobs.. Inner circle… those who have not yet worked outer circle. Those from the outer, ask someone a few questions from the inner.
