Glossophobia is the technical term for a severe fear of public speaking. People with glossophobia experience physical symptoms like a dry mouth, weak voice, shaking body, sweating, blushing and rapid heartbeat when speaking in front of even a small audience. Symptoms also include intense anxiety before or at the thought of speaking to a group, and avoiding events where individuals have to address the group. Glossophobia is one of the most common phobias, affecting as many as 75% of people, though public speaking training through organizations like Toastmasters International can help reduce the fear to a manageable level.
