This six-week unit focuses on stories, poetry, and informational texts inspired by the sea. Students will read about characters that long for or live near the sea to become familiar with ocean topics. They will compare poems about oysters and write stories inspired by Sarah, Plain and Tall. Students will also research their favorite sea creature to build ocean animal knowledge. The unit aims to explore why the sea inspires writers and humans' curiosity about the sea through engagement with texts and exploration/research. Distributed resources include books about canoeing, whales, water around the world, cod history, and adjectives.
