Summery of Research On
Homelessness
Hannah Sewell
This was the first question that I asked to
my peers. I can already see that the
majority of people that answered my
questionnaire were in the correct target
audience bracket. For example SASH’s
work involves young people from 16-24.
86% that answered my questionnaire are
16-19 years old which means that I know
my answers will be accurate. It also shows
that 18% that answer were 20-24 years
which is also important for my research. It
is known that ¾ of the people that SASH
works with are ages from 16-17 years. The
lowest percentage shown was 4% which
was over 25, this is good as we don’t need
information for that age group.
This graph shows me just how much
people were female and male. This is
important because it will help through the
questionnaire to see what males think of
homelessness and what females think of it.
If they both have very different opinions
then I can see which one will help towards
my poster. By also looking at it I could try
to merge both ideas together so that it
connects with both genders, this would
make the poster more successful to the
public.
When looking at this I found that 65% of
my audience were from North Yorkshire,
this is good because for areas like the
North East, there is a rise in
unemployment and cuts etc. It would be
good to get an opinion on what they
think of homelessness and what ideas
they would have on how to improve it.
It’s a negative that East Riding only has
10% because I don’t really know about
that area and what SASH does to help
them. Hopefully I can see there results
and see what they think overall. It is
good that York has 35% because that’s
where SASH is based. It will be good to
compare each region to see how much
homelessness is a problem in there
area.
This graph says a lot. The fact that 83% said that
they would donate means that they care about
a homeless charity and also the fact that they
have spare money to do so. The age group that
I asked for this questionnaire were mostly the
age of 16-19, at these ages it’s hard to get a job
and also you might have fees to pay for further
education. This probably shows that 22%
wouldn’t donate money at this time because
they don’t have the spare money to do so. If
more people are willing to donate the money it
means when giving out posters they will be
interested in the charity and cause.
From reading the answers from this graph I
have found that 9 of the answers were
saying how there can be many factors to
being homeless and you can’t point out
whether it is a choice or not. Whilst 7
people thought that it wasn’t your choice to
be homeless, they thought that you could
mostly be kicked out without knowing you
were going to etc. Finally only 4 people
thought homelessness was a choice which
means they are using a stereotype against it
like e.g. they are drug addicts etc or that
they’ve not experienced it themselves. For
the answer mostly to be that they aren’t
sure shows that they don’t know much
about what happens to homeless people and
that they should be provided more with
information in posters etc.
This question has a very dominant answer this is
because people feel that if they have the
opportunity to look have there friend then they
would. 18 people said they were be willing to
help a friend because they know them and they
have probably gone through a lot together.
Whilst 2 said they wouldn’t be sure because it
depends if they can help them with it or it is
better for an organization to help them. From
looking at the answers it turns out that everyone
would help a friend, no one rejected there idea.
This is good for my research because it shows
that people need to know that a charity like SASH
does a background check on all the young people
so that they are okay and safe. They need to
know that homeless people aren’t smelly and all
on drugs.
This is a positive way of showing results as
SASH are in demand for new volunteers, it is
good they 65% of people believe that they
could volunteer to help charities such as
SASH. The more volunteers they have then
the more homeless people they can help,
volunteers give young people the
opportunity to live with them so that they
are safe and not in danger. SASH has been
going for 20 years so it’s important that
volunteers know that it’s a good charity that
hasn’t had a problem with homeless people
living with volunteers. It must be said that
over a quarter of people wouldn’t volunteer
because of the fact that you bring a
homeless person into your home, it would
be good to get there attention to through
my posters.
This graph tells people that SASH
definitely needs more volunteers and
branding. The fact that they base over
North Yorkshire, York and East Riding
means that much more people should
know about this charity. The fact that
SASH has had such a demand on people
that were homeless last year means that
more people should know about it due
to family and friends not having a place
to go. A staggering 82% haven't heard of
this charity, this is made me think about
the location that I can put my posters so
more people can see them and that they
can be more obvious to the public. The
fact that these people are mostly 16-19
means that they probably wouldn’t have
to reason to donate to a charity or even
look them up.
This question has shown me that people think
that there isn’t enough awareness on
homelessness, it’s not a big thing that’s on the
news most of the time. 8 people thought that
there wasn’t enough charities to help people
that are homeless, instead they have to surf
between homes. Sometimes they’ll go to a
friends and then a grandparents, it’s not stable
or suitable for anyone. The fact that SASH alone
looks after 300 each year and there is a growing
demand means there needs to be more
volunteering charities that are willing to help.
Whilst 4 people thought that there was enough
charities to help others. 5 people didn’t know
much at all about charities to comment on that
factor. This means overall that SASH would have
to grow as a charity to help all the homeless
youth or more charities open up.
Most of the answers came to helping a homeless
person on the street. One answer said that they
‘should get respect’ and another said that ‘they
shouldn’t live like that no one should’. This shows
that people do care about the homeless and they
don’t like seeing them on the street. Some offered
to give them food. 9 People said they would help. 6
people said they weren’t sure whether they should
help the homeless because of there looks,
background and if they were drunk. This is because
people that are 16-24 only see older adults on the
street that really have no place to go. The younger
people that are homeless wouldn’t be like this, they
look normal and like everyone else. They used
another stereotype over homeless people which
isn’t good at all. Whilst 4 people said they definitely
wouldn’t help a homeless person. One person said
that people sit on the ground pretending to be
homeless to get money so they don’t trust homeless
people. They have to realise that children would feel
more scared being on the street as they are very
vulnerable.
